Hi there, DS is almost 14 mths and has a high temp. Other symptoms are cough, runny nose and mild eye infection. GP yesterday said it was a virus and to wait it out. today he's been quite cranky but played well and in good spirits after calpol. Now that it is bedtime, DS is very hot and whimpering in his sleep. I normally breastfeed him to sleep. Not sure what to do, his temp is 39.5, he has a retchy cough, cold hands and feet. No rash. I last gave calpol at 3 pm (and neurofen at 1 which didn't have much effect) and it is now 7.30. He's sleeping and moaning in my arms and feels v hot. My DH left at 6 on a night out and won't be back till the morning...just looking for reassurance really....confused because guidance says seek med help if lethargic and sleepy but this is his bedtime....

We had this a few weeks ago and when alternating calpol and Brufen every few hours it did dip a bit eventually. Through the night my friend suggested cold wet socks, this really made a difference, although there was some initial protesting.

Night time is always the worst!

MrsMoosickle · 03/03/2012 19:49

We also had the cold hands and feet bit when temp was over 39 but it all balanced a bit when it came down to 38. Why not just give NHS a call and seek a bit of advice, even if it's just to talk it through and get some reassurance seeing as you are alone tonight.

Maccapaccawacca · 03/03/2012 19:52

Give some calpol, if it responds (I.e it comes down) then it's probably viral but if not ring out of hours GP

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 03/03/2012 19:53

if the fever doesn't go down with calpol/nurofen/stripping down/cold compresses it's time to call ooh gp.

SpottyTeacakes · 03/03/2012 19:56

Dd often gets high temps over 39.

Alternate between the Calpol and Neurofen.

Dr said you can use a flannel with TEPID water, never cold.

I hope he feels better soon, if his temp doesn't go down at all after the next couple of doses of Neurofen and Calpol then call OOH.

We find Neurofen works best for dd :)

ObviouslyOblivious · 03/03/2012 19:56

Oh the poor little thing :( Is there any way your DH can come home?

fashionistadisastainnit · 03/03/2012 20:04

I agree, if his temp is not coming down once he's had meds I'd call NHS. Is he rousable when he's asleep? Is his breathing ok?

winnybella · 03/03/2012 20:04

Children often run high temperatures with minor infections so I wouldn't panic yet. It's time for another Calpol dose. If the temp comes down, then just put him to bed and check on him throughout the night. Alternating paracetamol with ibuprofen is a good idea if the fever is very high and hard to get down, so you could give Calpol now, then in 3 hrs ibuprofen, then Calpol 3hrs later etc etc.

Thanks guys!just to update, after I posted he started crying and screaming .i managed to calm down by flicking on show me show me (his favourite) on sky plus so that i could call NHS direct. I was shaking like a leaf!anyway, after speaking to the nurse, she said give him calpol and then contact the out of hours GP. He's had calpol now and on the boob. Thanks for the advice! Xxx

Temperature tends to be higher at the end of the day for some reason. Make sure he has not too many clothes on but don't strip him completely either.

Heyyyho · 03/03/2012 20:43

If the temp spikes at evening and morning it is likely a virus - A consistent high temp is usually an infection

AnnawakeFourkiller · 04/03/2012 10:40

How is he this morning? Hope all's well

Can I just highlight that high fevers with cold hand and feet are a particular symptom of meningitis and not having a rash can never rule meningitis out (many types don't involve a rash at all). Again -hope all is OK and it's indeed a virus, but as mum of a survivor some of the things you said in your OP would ring alarm bells with me..

Hi there, we had quite a rough night but at least his temp went down to around 37.5-38. My DH got back this morning (sent him a pointed text to get his arse back down here Angry)so we took him to the GP centre to get him checked out. I was really worried at this stage because he was crying in a semi distressed manner and his temp was back up to 38. GP was very reassuring, checked his chest, ears, mouth and temps. Verdict?A virus and ear infection. Said the mucus is causing him discomfort and we were prescribed saline drops and antibiotics.told to keep dosing with calpol and nurofen. Thanks for all your help and advice, everything seemed so scary last night on my own. Thank goodness for MN!!

Glad he's ok, I think it's always worth taking them to the doctors because when they are so little you can't tell if they have earache/sore throat etc
