Tooth growing in roof of mouth (dd1 age 8)?

Dd1 (8) has been complaining of tooth ache so i ask her to show me and she has a tooth cutting in way behind her other teeth in the roof of her mouth, she has 2 gaps where new theeth should be growing. Has anyone else had this with there child?

I'm going to phone the dentist tomorrow to see if they can see her on friday. I'm really worried that she will need surgery, she has Aspergers syndrome and is hyper sensitive so hates being touched and poked around and her pain threshold is very low.

What will the dentist do?

I haven't had this with mine, but a friend has with one of her boys. I'm afraid surgery was needed, but under general - I appreciate no-one wants their child to have general anaesthetic, but at least he knew nothing about it.

I imagine the dentist will take xrays to see just what's going on, and plan from there. Does he/she know your child well? Round here we have had a succession of one year contract newly qualified dentists dealing with the NHS children which means no continuity, although this year the new dentist is planning to stay for a few years she says.

One of my dd's is on the Asperger's scale, and getting her to the dentist is one of her horrors. Last year's one year contract junior dentist was willing to spend a dozen appointments taking her through gently, lovely lady, and we finally got a filling done. More importantly, we have also persuaded her that Piriton is a far more powerful sedative than it really is, and she thinks she's away with the fairys when she's only had two spoonfuls. This may help if the dentist has to put a reflector in her mouth to get the xray - I find that hard, and I'm a grown-up!

Best wishes to you and dd1.

Thank you, luckily she is keen on going to the dentist as she has had only good expereances. The tooth has cut through some more and its not as far back as i first thought (so not as bad) but its still set back a lot from the others, it may be that it could be pulled closer to the others with a brace (when she's a bit older), will have to wait and see what the dentist says and see what the x-rays show. Fingers crossed there will be no pain involved.

i had this myself as a child. My left top cannine. I had it removed under general anaesthetic in hospital along with 2 of my wisdom teeth aged 17. I dont know if it would have been a hospital job if my wisdoms hadnt also needed to come out..
