Hive-type rash on hands and feet.

My DS is 17mo and the last ocuple of days has developed a hive-type rash on his hands and feet a couple of hours after getting up. The 'blobs' change shape and join up over the course of an hour or so and then seem to disappear on their own after max 4 hours. They are on the backs of his hands, tops of his feet/ankles with a few up his legs. They don't seem to bother him. His face has also been a little more blotchy than normal at the same times, but no hives.

At first I thought they were some kind of bite, but think I have ruled that out as a cause. I am thinking its an allergic reaction of some kind to something he is in direct physical contact with, but I just can't work out what. No new cleaning products etc, we have a cat but have always had one, he didn't eat anything new and in any case I wouldn't expect a strong reaction on his feet.

He has had a nasty d and v bug very recently so I wondered if it could possibly be connected to that, but again, it's where it is that is odd.

Does anyone have any ideas. I will probably take him to the GP if it seems to be getting any worse or lasts much longer not that I am suggesting that Dr MN isn't sufficient diagnosis of course. Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree with the allergy thing so open to all suggestions.

Hand foot and mouth?!

Seriously - its a common illness in kids!

I did look into that one, but as the rash is on the backs of hands and feet rather than palms and the wheals disappear after a few hours and reappear later, I sort of ruled it out.

Ah, ok, seemed like a very neat solution!

Illness can indeed make the whole body much more sensitive than normal, so could be a contact allergic reaction. Something his bed sheets have been washed in, or maybe dust mites?

I remember one of my much younger sisters having this when we were children, mummy called it the creeping lurgy! She had been off colour, we never found a precise cause and it stopped after a day or two. I remember she covered it with calamine lotion to help sooth it and made sure there was no clothing rubbing against it.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm sure it is something that will vanish of it's own accord.
