Getting my ds to take penicillin

Svrider · 28/02/2012 16:28

How on earth do I get my 3yo ds to take his penicillin?
I've tried a syringe and he chocked
He now screams as soon as he sees the bottle
He's got to have it4 times per day

Bribery.

Dip the syringe in something he likes - fruit puree / yogurt

Hold him down, squirt into side of his mouth in small amounts, pinch nose to make him swallow.

LadyNada · 28/02/2012 16:45

yup, bribery

give him 1 chocolate button and promise 2 more if he takes his medicine

add in tv/favourite game/comic - whatever it takes

If bribery fails, try a threat: poorly boys have to lie down in bed until they are better. No tv, no books, no toys.....just lie there quietly until he's better. Follow through - he won't last long.

I put it in milk and told dd it was strawberry milk. Worked for a few days!

Svrider · 28/02/2012 17:06

Would that be ok cookiesnap, or would the penicillin be too diluted??

OP posts:
LadyNada · 28/02/2012 17:23

It just needs to go in Svrider, no matter how 'dilute'

The only thing to beware of is if he only drinks half his milkshake - so give him a small one (with penicillin in), offer more (un-drugged!)when he's finished.

Svrider · 28/02/2012 17:58

Perfect
Just sent dh for bottle of fruit shoot
He'll be that pleased that he's been allowed FS he won't noticed it's been drugged

thanks all Wink

Good luck. Ds got so good at spotting antibiotics in anything, even his favourite things didn't get more than one dose in. Grin

Svrider · 28/02/2012 21:32

Yup dewe he noticed straight away!
We had to do the holding him down and syringe it down thing Sad
Dh is a bit rubbish at this, so was in charge of the follow up cuddle! Hmm

Ah bad luck. You just have to do as much as you can, hope some goes in and rely on the body's healing mechanism if not. Worst aspect of parenting young kids I think.

PeppermintPanda · 29/02/2012 23:44

Could you try getting someone else to give it to him for a couple of doses? Grandparent maybe? DD1 has had a lot time in hospital and has had to take a lot of revolting tasting meds. When she was 3, and totally refusing to take an antibiotic on the ward one time for either me or DH, her favourite nurse came over, took the syringe and very firmly told her that she had to take it. And she swallowed it straight away. After that she always took that medicine without any argument. She's now 6 and we had a similar situation a few weeks ago - after DH and I spending an hour pursuading, bribing, blackmailing, pleading and arguing with her to swallow 6ml of foul tasting meds, we went out of the room, the nurse went in and within 2 minutes, DD had swallowed it!

If you haven't already, I would check with the pharmacist before mixing it with anything. DD is on penicillin twice a day for the rest of her life (damaged spleen), and she has to take it on an empty stomach - she allowed to drink water and fruit juice drinks, but not any milky drinks etc for some reason.

BlackLetterDay · 01/03/2012 00:01

I have done the mixing with milk or juice before, if it's the banana penicillin, try the nesquick banana milkshake powder, just a little bit in milk, with the antibiotics added. It worked for us, I know you are probably not supposed to do it, but ds2 did get better, and quite frankly it was better than either no meds or the trauma of restraining him and pinching his nose 3 x a day.

Ds1 had hand foot and mouth quite badly, horrible ulcers in his mouth, it got to the stage of either pinning him down and squirting ibuprofen in, or him ending up in hospital on a drip, it was so painful he refused anything orally full stop. We did end up pinning him down Sad it was the most sensible option, once the ibuprofen had kicked in he would drink a little and we could keep him topped up on painkillers that way.

It was a long long time before he would willingly take any medicine from a spoon though.

Svrider · 01/03/2012 09:42

Thanks all
After a few times been "pinned down" (wrapped up in a towel!) he has realised he HAS to take it
This with bribery (milky bar buttons) has worked Smile
