Ds's stomach pain.

ds is 11. For the past couple of years, every couple of months he has had a really bad stomach cramp- very painful- sometimes making him cry, for about 5 minutes. Then it's better. He has no other symptoms and is very healthy. We've always put it down to wind, and not really thought much about it. Then the last 4 days it's happened every day. I took him to the doctor today, who was pretty relaxed- suggested abdominal migraine (ds's dad and sister both get migraine). However, when she asked him where the pain was, and he pointed, she said she still though it was nothing, but if I wanted she would send him for a scan just in case, because he had pointed to where his liver is. I've googled- and scared myself a bit. Has anyone any experience that might help?

I don't know - sorry. Bumping for you though.

Fwiw if she was at all concerned shed be rushing him for a scan. I take it no signs of jaundice etc?

Sorry no experience as far as liver goes, but hopefully my reply might encourage other responses too Wink

I am used to Stomach pain in DCs though, my DD has IBS diagnosis & stomach pain can be referred, ie not felt where the actual problem is, so your GP could well be right - but if its been ongoing for a long while, then maybe asking for a Gastro referral would be the way forward - our friends son had appendicitis - grumbled for months & months before it became more obvious, but not in the expected area of the stomach - she felt guilty as hell that she missed the symptoms & thought he was just fussing & not wanting to walk - & shes a Doctor

I do also know from my own DD that DCs often get pain in the stomach lymph glands, when fighting a virus etc, so that might be something to look out for

also keep a food diary - is there something he eats/drinks that triggers this reaction ??- fatty foods could indicate liver problems, as could pale, or floating stools

hope you get to the bottom of it

Hi. Just wondered if the pain has always been under his right ribs ie where the liver is? When I get wind pain, it tends to be under right ribs, not central, but it can be under left ribs - I guess because the colon winds around. Also, if the pain moves, if it's any comfort, I have been investigated for stomach issues in the past and the gastro consultant said that if the pain moves, it is much less likely to be serious. If it stays in one place all the time, then it probably needs looking into.

Also, if it happens at the same time of day eg dinner time, then it could be peristalsis - the gut contracting to move the food along to let more in! One of my DC's used to suffer this pain on a daily basis but has grown out of it.

You are not alone though. One or other of my DC seems to complain of stomach ache on a very regular basis!!

I don't know if the pain has always been in the same place- I don't think I've ever asked him. I'll ask later. No, no other symptoms at all- no poo problems or anything- no jaundice, just the occasional pain. We have tried to pin it to particular food or times of day or anything but no pattern at all. He has loads of energy, does toms of exercise, eats well, loves school. Oh, well, I suppose I'll just have to wait til the hospital appointment comes.
