Should I take 2-yr old DS to the doctors?

DS woke this morning with a splendid rash all over his face (but not his body, as far as I can tell).

He's had a streaming nose and a bit of a cough for days, and over the weekend he had a bad day when his temperature went up to 104.5 at one point, but we managed it with Calpol/Nurofen/cold bath and open windows.

Today he's a bit warm but nowhere near as poorly (he's playing with his fire station with some CBeebies in the background now) and has drunk milk and eaten most of a hot cross bun.

I'm inclined not to trouble the doctor but am guilty of being a bit unsympathetic to run-of-the-mill illnesses. The rash has thrown me a bit - does that make it more serious?

I'd appreciate your advice.

Also I have a 6-week old DS2. Is there anything I can do to prevent him getting it?

Take to a pharmacist to check out?

minceorotherwise · 27/02/2012 09:33

Well it could be a viral rash, but I would always get it checked just to be sure it's nothing contagious. Bt then I am prob a bit pfb.
An hour out of your day though? Better safe than sorry.
If you have a 6 week old baby though, you prob need to check it's nothing else.
If they live in the same house the baby will prob get it, although I think sometimes bf babies tend not to pick up so many things

Sounds viral, dd was the same when she had slapped cheek so could be that. Pharmacist or nurse are other options.

The cold bath/open windows thing is NOT recommended btw.

Imnotaslimjim · 27/02/2012 09:42

Does it look like this slapped cheek syndrome

It can be worse and cover more of the face. If its slapped cheek, you don't need the dr unless his temp goes very high. Incubation is 18-21 days so chances are DS2 will have already caught it

Thanks, I'll give my doctor a call.

The cold bath and open window is what my GP told me to do last time DS had such a high fever (about a month ago - I think he's prone to them like his father). Worked a treat too. Do you know why it isn't recommended SOH?

Taking a 2 y/o with a temperature and a rash is not troubling the doctor - especially if you have a tiny baby as well.

Don't even think twice about it. Any decent practise will have you in like a shot and you have as much right to be there as anyone else.

It's more like lots of individual spots, mainly across his cheeks and some on his forehead. Other than the spotty bits, his cheeks aren't particularly red.

Just took his temperature and he is 98.9.
