DD coughing constantly getting worried now

My 22 month old DD was given a preventer inhaler 8 weeks ago as she'd had a horrible cough for months and the reliever inhaler seemed to have no effect whatsoever. About ten days after starting the preventer inhaler her cough was so much better, she didn't cough much and when she did the reliever inhaler seemed to work. She developed a cold a few days ago and of course she is coughing again but since she went for a walk with DH this afternoon she has been coughing loads and the reliever inhaler doesn't seem to have any effect again. I am taking her to docs in the morning but if anyone can give me any advice on how to deal with the coughing tonight I would really appreciate it. She has finally fallen asleep but I think we'll be in for a rough night. Thanks.

Have you got a humidifier? If not set a damp towel on a warm radiator in her room. Drop some olbas oil on a muslin. You could also try an onion cut in half soumds bizarre but that worked for dd. Try and raise her cot or set her so she is not flat.
If the coughing wakes her try rubbing vicks onto her feet.

These are short terms solutions until you see a dr obviously.

Poor little thing, my DD is like this and has now been diagnosed as athmatic (diagnosed at 3y)

We prop her up with pillows so she isn't lying flat and do everything Hey advised - not heard of the onion one though, where do you put it?

DD coughs more at night and after running etc, her blue pump does help but I do have to give her about 8 pumps in one go.

Will she drink any water? DD hates to drink when sleepy but if I tell her her teddy is thirsty she will have a drink with ted which seems to help.

Do see the doctor tomorrow.

Thank you for your replies I have vapour rub on her chest and a Karvol plug in thing which usually helps. Eight pumps in one go? I'll try giving more pumps but she hates taking her inhaler sometimes and becomes octopus child when the spacer goes anywhere near her! Yes will take her in the morning, my poor baby she's exhausted.

Our Doctor advised more pumps the last time we went to hospital, don't give extra until you have seen your doctor.

DD didn't like her spacer at first, I had to sort of cradle her and pin her arms out of the way, not nice but needed to be done and if she threw a fit and was screaming and crying at keast I knew she would have to take a big breath of insulin Smile

She low sings a song with her mask on before bed, it does get easier.

at least I knew.

I need my bed... She now sings a song....

I'm not sure because of her age but they may give her oral steroids.

If she is very bad you could call NHS and ask about increasing her reliever dose - they will ask you to come in I'd have thought though. Also if you go tomorrow ask if she can have more puffs of the preventer inhaler 7- ds gets a higher dose when going through a bad patch and it does seem to work. He is 5 though.

You could try giving a anti-histamine (e,g, piriton). We do this with our 3 asthmatic children, as the doctor says it helps to thin the mucus.

Sorry - that 7 mid sentence is totally random.

Hello all thanks for all your replies. Took DD to docs this morning she has chest infection so has been given antibiotics and GP also prescribed a stronger preventer inhaler, double the strength she's on now just to take whilst she's ill, she will go back to 50 mcgs. I'm happy but just wanted to check this sounds normal as my mum was questioning the new dosage (used to be paediatric nurse).

Sorry that last bit made no sense! She's normally on the lowest dosage of Clenil Modulite which is two puffs of 50 mcgs twice a day, so her new inhaler is two puffs of 100 mcgs twice a day until she's better when she'll go back to her original dose. Has anyone found problems with the steroid inhalers, e.g irritability or sleeplessness?

That's a fine dose, Ds is 2.3 and on 400mg daily of clenil plus other drugs for his asthma and never had any issues.
