My dd has astigmatism so she has to wear glasses. It is likely that she will need glasses for a very long time or forever. Just wonder if anyone out there knows or has experience of astigmatism and has been told that they can or cannot learn to drive? Just wonder the public transports are very poor outside main cities so how can she cope without being able to drive when she's grown up.

I've got a fairly bad astigmatism, and drive. Never been a problem as its corrected by glasses

KatyMac · 26/02/2012 17:18

Well it depends upon the astigmatism

I have had one in my left eye for decades & driven, I recently developed one in my other eye.

But your daughter's may be different

hellhasnofury · 26/02/2012 17:18

Both DS and I have astigmatism and drive. Many, many people do have a slight astigmatism, why do you think it will affect her ability to drive?

QED · 26/02/2012 17:19

I really wouldn't worry - both my mum and XH have astigmatism and both drive. As long as she has glasses or contact lenses she will be fine :)

scurryfunge · 26/02/2012 17:21

Don't worry, I have an astigmatism and drive very well!
DS has quite a strong one and is taking lessons at the moment.

Milngavie · 26/02/2012 17:23

Another driver with astigmatism here Smile. No problems here.

QuinnFabray · 26/02/2012 17:23

My dad has the worst astigmatism his optician has ever seen, and he was a bus driver for many years.

colditz · 26/02/2012 17:24

She'll be fine ... I've never heard that people with astigmatism can't drive - this would stop half the population from driving as astigmatism is very common. All it means is "funny shaped eyeball"

NormanTheForeman · 26/02/2012 17:26

I have astigmatism. I also don't drive (I learned but was rubbish at it). But this isn't because of the astigmatism, it's because I have a squint, so really only use one eye properly. This gives me very poor binocular vision, so I find it very hard to judge distances.

south345 · 26/02/2012 17:27

Dp has/had astigmatism and recently had his eyes lasers so no glasses now, if anything it was his glasses that made it difficult to drive because of the glare.

Catsmamma · 26/02/2012 17:28

who on earth told you that utter bollocks ???

ilovedjasondonovan · 26/02/2012 17:28

I've got astigmatism, and happily drive. I'm a specs wearer though. After several years wearing them you really learn not to care about them so much. After all, if its a case of bumping into things/squinting all the time or just wearing them I've concluded the latter is preferable.

juneybean · 26/02/2012 17:28

I have an astigmatism and they never even asked before I started learning to drive and I've been driving for 4 years now.

BramblyHedge · 26/02/2012 17:29

I have astigmatism and a lazy left eye so my 3d vision is fairly rubbish...and i drive.

AlmaMartyr · 26/02/2012 17:37

I have astigmatism and I'm very short-sighted. I drive just fine. I mostly wear contact lenses because I find them more convenient. I've never heard anything about astigmatism and not being able to drive, but I don't know much about it.

cheekyginger · 26/02/2012 20:07

Hi Cleek,

There is no reason that your DD wouldn't be able to drive when her vision is corrected with glasses/contact lenses. Unless she has some other eye problem??? Who on earth told you that she might not be able to drive?

TheDogTheDogHesAtItAgain · 26/02/2012 20:09

I have it, and (with glasses or lenses) I drive. Never heard of that ever being a problem, tbh.

AprilSkies · 26/02/2012 20:10

I have sever astigmastism and short sightedness. Glasses or contacts allow me to drive.

Neena28 · 26/02/2012 20:14

I've got it an astigmatism in both eyes and am very short sighted. I wear contacts most of the time but glasses too (especially when I fancy looking a bit different for the day).

I have always driven and know my optician well enough to wave at if we pass so he clearly isn't worried that I drive either!!

asdevil · 27/02/2012 11:21

I have it in both eyes, very lazy left eye (it wasn't noticed when I was a child, and therefore not treated ).

Have no issues driving - my spatial awareness is very good

moogalicious · 27/02/2012 11:23

i have astigmatism in both eyes plus very short sighted. I've been driving 15 years, never a problem.

Kellamity · 27/02/2012 11:25

Another driver with astigmatism in one eye, never had a problem.

However I do know of 2 brothers whose astigmatism and sight is soooo bad they are both unable to drive so it is out there.

TheSkiingGardener · 27/02/2012 11:31

I have bad astigmatism, glasses mean I am fine to drive. It did mean I couldn't have contacts for a while, but I can now if I want to.
