Found this on the nhs website :

Recurrent mouth ulcers

The cause of recurrent (returning) mouth ulcers is often unknown. However, a number of factors may increase your chances of getting recurrent ulcers. These are listed below.
Stress and anxiety
Oral trauma, such as excessive tooth brushing, or chewing sharp or hard foods.
Hormonal changes: some women develop mouth ulcers during their period. This is due to changes in the hormone levels in your body during your menstrual cycle.
Eating certain foods can also increases your likelihood of developing mouth ulcers. Foods that have been identified as increasing the risk of mouth ulcers include:
chocolate
coffee
peanuts
almonds
strawberries
cheese
tomatoes
wheat flour
Around 40% of people who have recurrent mouth ulcers have a family history of the condition

Hi thetwigletsmum

I was just about to start a thread of my own on this subject. My 4 year old son also keeps getting mouth ulcers - I have just come down from settling him as the pain woke him up and he has been crying and crying.

I don't know what to do - we have taken him to the doctors twice, once they said they couldn't see anything and once they said what I thought was ulcers were just tastebuds. But every three or four weeks he is crying with the pain and they last about a week.

What do your daughter's ulcers look like? My son's start out a bit blistery and then turn into white spots, on the tip of his tongue now but they were underneath the tongue.

He's crying again now so I am going to go up to him. :-( It breaks my heart to see him in pain so often, Calpol doesn't seem very effective nor does Bonjella. What do you do for your daughter's ulcers?

I do believe mouth ulcers can be an indicator of stomach / bowel illnesses. My SIL suffered for years with mouth ulcers, with no known cause, and has developed ulerative colitis (initially it was suspected she had Crohns).

I'm certainly not suggesting this is the case in this example, but if it is persistent, I would possibly look into getting a second opinion or being asked for a referral to a specialist.

Sorry, meant to add to the above that in this instance, my SILs specialist told her that her mouth ulcers were connected, and an early indicator of bowel troubles.

That's interesting - both sides of my family have had serious bowel illnesses so I have always thought of it as a condition to keep an eye on. And my mum has always had bad mouth ulcers.

I have done some Googling just now and I think my son might have "tongue pimples" or inflamed papillae rather than ulcers, no-one seems to really know what causes them though.

I get mouth ulcers and they really hurt. And you can't stop bothering them.

If you speak to the pharmacist, he or she should be able to recommend something more way effective than Bonjela. The over-the-counter treatment I use (adcortyl) has a tiny dose of steroid in it, and it is v effective.

I'd speak to the pharmacist, though. They will be best placed to advise.

I am prone to MU and get them now and again.

I think some people are just more prone to them than others. I don't have any related bowel conditions.

My mouth ulcers are alway on the inside of my cheeks. If i nip the skin with my teeth it generally turns to an ulcer. And if i'm stressed over tired they sometimes just appear. Rarely get them on my tounge....maybe tongue pimplets are more likely?

Reenypip · 25/02/2012 12:44

Hi, I'm 25 years old and I've suffered from multiple mouth ulcers ever since I was little. I'm hardly ever free of them and can get 8 on average at a time.

Reenypip · 25/02/2012 12:46

I can get mouth ulcers everywhere, my tongue, throat, inside of cheeks, guns, inside lips, everywhere.
