She has had a cough for a couple of day but is at school and is not unwell
She is eating entirely usual diet with the exception of having taken to drinking hot water with a slice of lemon in.
But for two days she has been saying 'seriously, weirdy pooh situation' and I was upstairs tonight and she showed me. Avocado.

Any ideas?

Has she eaten anything blue... Doctor Who Tardis cake, or with black food colouring?

We've had this a few times but it was food colouring not illness.

Pagwaatch · 20/02/2012 20:47

I assumed food colouring but honestly, I cannot think of anything.

Has she had cough medicine?

Pagwaatch · 20/02/2012 22:12

No, she hasn't. It's a bit baffling but I will just wait and assume it will go back to normal. If it doesn't I will have to think again.

Green poo in babies is supposed to be a sign of under-feeding. Not sure about girls her age though. Confused I know if I have been very good on my low-carbing and my food intake goes right down once ketosis kicks in, it is greener if not exactly green. Has her cough meant that she has had a reduce appetite?

SoupDragon · 21/02/2012 07:36

"Green poo in babies is supposed to be a sign of under-feeding" No it isn't.

Could it just be mucous? Lord knows. She's presumably too old to have water green play dough.

HillyWallaby · 21/02/2012 13:00

What is it then? That's what I was always told when mine were tiny but midwives and HVs.

Pagwaatch · 21/02/2012 14:05

It's just blooming odd. We can't think of anything she could have eaten.

She is full mucous but she gets lots of coughs and it has never happened before. Honestly, it's really green - completely - not green tinged or patchy. She looks like she has pooh fashioned from avocado

Am I starting to sound like the pooh troll?

Has she eaten lots of green veg?

Pagwaatch · 21/02/2012 14:12

No more than usual. She loves broccoli and green beans but she has them often.

I sm sure it will turn out to be food related but I am baffled as I just can't think of anything.

Has she been taking any pills or multi-vitamin tablets? I can't imagine mucus would do that - it would be more of a mucus coating than an actual avocado poo.

Just found this, courtesy of Dr Google.

'Faeces in children sometimes look a different colour from normal when they have moved through the bowel more quickly than usual.

This could be due to a viral infection such as gastroenteritis but if your son is otherwise well, this seems unlikely.'

There were several saying basically the same thing: that a green stool can be a sign of the faeces have transitted through the intestinal tract much quicker than usual, and that having a viral or bacterial infection is often a cause of that. So even though she hasn't been terribly poorly perhaps it was just enough.

Also a high iron intake can do it.

Pagwaatch · 22/02/2012 09:59

Oooh thanks. Perhaps ger cough is a symptom of a virally thing.

Anyway my morning Pooh Watch report is that she is getting back to normal.

A lot of Mucous swallowed from a cough/upper respiratory tract can cause green pooh. I wouldn't worry too much about it
