Not a Pros/Cons thread please, just some experienced advice!

DS(4yrs) was admitted as an emergency in huge pain, and had a circumcision yesterday.

He seems to be doing pretty welland mostly pain free unless he's weeing..though at least he can actually wee now! Bit sore to start peeing, and apprehensive about anyone knocking his willy, obviously.

We're going for the 'let it all hang out' in the fresh air strategy.

When did you first try to give your DS a bath? (with or without salt?)

When was he comfortable enough to put PJ bottoms on?

Do they all have pain when they're weeing for the first few days?

Vaseline or anything els onto the wound, or leave well alone if it looks noninfected?

Thanks for any advice

Timetosmile, I'm sorry this happened to your son without you or him being able to prepare for it as is usual with a childhood circumcision.

Most of your instinctive suggestions seem to be heading in the right direction.

From my experience with a 7yo. and taking your list as it comes:

It's good to know he's pain free - the relief will help him to have a positive attitude to what has happened to him. Pain on peeing immediately after being circumcised is not unusual but it doesn't usually persist. Anxiety about knocking his willy is only natural it is extremely tender for the first 48-72 hours

Fresh air strategy is good but keep an eye out for infection if it becomes hot and inflamed or there is pus. If the swelling is subsiding that's a good sign. Also there may be a slight oozing of watery blood and a yellow crusty scab may form as the wound dries up. Both indicate normal healing. Boys do heal remarkable quickly after circumcision if all goes well.

Salt baths good and as early as you can persuade him to take one. Some boys will resist. Don't make a big thing of it. If all is going well back off and be patient.

PJ bottoms again as soon as you can persuade him - day 3 with my DN if I remember rightly. Otherwise a long tee shirt is a good idea.

Vaseline yes, it helps if you can apply it gently. He'll probably 'ouch!'

Keep quiet and resting, reading, TV, video/board games etc. He may recover sooner than you expect. No astride toys if he does!

Hope this helps. Best wishes. I'll PM you with more info. later today.

Thanks Suzannesee, glad to know we're on the right track!
He's a bit morose now that other DCs have gone back to school, but grandpa coming over later to play!
How long did you keep up the paracet/brufen?

No experience as my boys are both still in tact! What happened to him that meant he needed an emergency circumcision? I've never heard of that before! :(

He'd always had a really tight foreskin but no problem weeing happily (and not too messily).
Then he started with a bit of pain weeing which I thought was a urine infection, but in fact was balanitis (infection under the foreskin)..everything swelled a bit (ouch) which meant that within 24 hours even straining and screaming, only a bit could trickle out at a time.
It was quite horrific actually, he was in agony with that stretchy type of pain you get as you're giving birth (at least thats what it sounded like)
The hospital staff were amazing...they saw him late saturday night and by 11am on Sunday it was all done and dusted.
Good news is that he's now pottering off to the loo to wee by himself, and survived a quick dip in a shallow bath tonight.

Owww - your poor ds! So pleased he was seen so quickly and hopefully he'll make a speedy recovery. Glad he survived his bath unscathed Grin

So glad to find this thread, really reassuring! ESP about the bath situation. My DS had full circ yesterday afternoon and literally will not let me near him and will not be moved around even. He goes hysterical! So distressing. And seems in agony weeing. But I think a lot of it is psychological as the thought of it is worse than the actual event as it were.
