I don't know what to do - DS crying non-stop since last night

I don't know what to do. My 15 month old was awake all of last night crying with a temperature of 39 degrees. We gave paracetamol and ibuprofen and I took him to the GP this morning. GP checked him over and said he couldn't find anything wrong and that it was probably a virus or teething pain.

He has been crying non-stop since we got back from the GP 2 hours ago. I have fed him, given him some more paracetamol (as advised by GP), given him some teething gel but he is hysterical. I am so tired as I did not sleep last night and I don't know what to do. He doesn't have a temperature now.

Did you get his ears checked? Ear infections can be agony, especially for babies lying down

Go back and get his ears checked

Take him back. Get them to check his urine as well as ears, throat, chest.

Dd did exactly this on friday night, she's a month older, it was a nasty ear infection.

Yes, he checked his ears - all clear, listened to his chest. Said it was a bit stuffy but nothing major. Poor mite is crying like crazy and is inconsolable.

PS. His 4 back molars are just erupting through and he is biting a lot and has very red cheeks.

I don't think a child would have a fever of 39 from teething. He is clearly in pain. What did the GP check? If he has been crying since last night, without sleep, I would take him to A&E and get him checked over by a proper paediatrician.

bumbleymummy · 20/02/2012 16:41

I agree with larry. I would get a second opinion. The first doctor might have missed something.

Teeth don't give you fevers of 39. Take him to a pediatric a&e if there is one in your area. Sounds like an ear infection (or urine infection). My ds used to get ear infections and 40+ temps all the time as a baby. Paracetemol didn't work at all to reduce the temp. We had to give him high doses of ibuprofen (at least higher than I was comfortable giving without a doctor's guidance).

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 20/02/2012 16:43

How is he now?

larrygrylls · 20/02/2012 16:44

It could be anything, including appendicitis. Children of that age are not good at localising pain. If a pre-verbal child is crying hysterically for over 2 hours, without sleep or being able to be comforted, it should be treated as a medical emergency.

I don't want to over dramatise, but I know what I would do in the OP's position.

Go to a walk-in centre if there is one near you or just to A&E. No one ever thinks it's excessive to check a second time on a very young child.
