Is this just a cold? Starting to worry about the baby.

We're waiting for the doctor's to open at 8.30 and will join the mad scramble for an appointment but wanted some opinions.

We've all had a horrid half term with coughs/colds/sore throats/gunky eyes. DD was pretty unwell for the first half of the week with a really nasty cough and my throat was razor-blade sore for days. We've all recovered mainly though we're all still a bit weak and exhausted.

DS is 24 weeks and over the weekend has turned into a snotty, unhappy mess. This is my first little baby with a cold and I'm just not sure what's normal.

He has a mild temp (38, coming down to 37ish with Calpol), really gunky and sticky eyes, streaming snot which runs down his throat and makes him gag/choke and he brings it back up again, nasty cough, is v hoarse today. He is unhappy, hasn't smiled for 24hrs, reduced feeding due to bunged up nose (I have really engorged breasts) but still having wet and dirty nappies. He just wants to sleep but is whimpering and moaning to himself even when asleep.

It is utterly and thoroughly miserable to watch.

Thanks Indith and dikkertjedap.

He's having 2.5mls of Calpol six hourly and only feeding well after that. I'm latching him on in his sleep though and he's staying hydrated without knowing about it. I've also expressed 6oz thos morning to help with engorgement. Weaning soon so will freeze it and use it in porridge or something.

He hates ibuprofen, gags and brings it straight up again. It's so thick even different flavours haven't fooled him.

We've had this too this weekend :( with 13mo DS. It's horrid, we were at a and e at 1am on Friday with his breathing (but he's prone to croup too). Just stupendous amounts of snot, cough, miserable little boy.

However he's got better after the steroids, calpol, lots of milk and mashed banana and this morning was visibly much better, I took him to the childminder and rang an hour later and she had no concerns :) going to get him now.

I hope your DS improves soon too. Miserable listening to them breathe isn't it :(

ObviouslyOblivious · 21/02/2012 07:25

How is DS this morning?

slightlycrumpled · 21/02/2012 09:10

How is he this morning? Hope you all got some sleep.

ShowOfHands · 21/02/2012 10:52

Have had no sleep. He's worse if anything. Breathing is quite rapid and shallow atm and he's distressed. We're just making arrangements for somebody to get dd from school for us and we're taking him to a&e. He is utterly unable to make a noise, his voice has gone entirely and he's sobbed most of the night. Sad Ventolin and steroids have done nothing.

Poor wee soul. You're doing the right thing. Couldn't you got to a+e on your own now?

slightlycrumpled · 21/02/2012 11:05

Oh no! A&E sounds like the right thing. You must all be exhausted. I would maybe take an overnight bag in case you end up staying in.
Poor boy he must feel terrible.

Indith · 21/02/2012 11:06

Oh SOH :( huge hugs to you both.

Sirzy · 21/02/2012 11:07

Glad you have said your going to a and e. hope he is better soon x

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 21/02/2012 17:22

SuiGeneris · 21/02/2012 17:26

Just seen this, so sorry, poor lamb.

Let us know if you get a minute, which I know you might not! Love xxx

Indith · 23/02/2012 13:15

I hope he is ok Showy x

We're back from hospital now! No internet access in the paeds department I'm afraid or I'd have updated sooner.

DS was very poorly indeed by the time we were admitted and was rushed straight for treatment. He was really quite unwell and continued to deteriorate until Wednesday when they established exactly what was happening and started immediate treatment.

I can't really talk about it all atm for fear of snotting vociferously but it's been a hard week and I've seen ds put through lots of hideous invasive procedures. I think I might just pretend it never happened.

He's home though. Still under the weather and on a host of meds but he's okay and getting better by the hour.

It was just a cold btw. Only caused by a nasty virus which in turn caused a few complications and secondary infections.

Hospital food's not bad though. Pleasantly surprised by the volume of custard.

Ill again. But having had a lovely message today about a friend's dd who was very poorly and seeing your message I am in absolutely no position to complain about anything.

bigkidsdidit · 25/02/2012 15:37

Oh, phew. I'm giving up mumsnet for a bit to get work done but I popped on today to check this. I'm so pleased you're home. Hope things get back to normal very soon.

BettyPerske · 25/02/2012 15:58

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 25/02/2012 21:52

Oh I've been checking all week (even started a thread in chat and wondered about coming across as a stalker!). Am so glad he's home and on the mend. Poor him and poor you.

ShowOfHands · 25/02/2012 22:05

Thank you you lovely lot.

He's so much better. I knew something wasn't right, hence the spidey senses tingling and the thread starting. But I was shocked when he ended up admitted to hospital with pneumonia. Antibiotics are marvellous things though. Hurrah for modern medicine.

Ds had pneumonia aged just 4 2 xmases ago. I still have nightmares about it so totally understand how you're feeling. No lasting problems though it might be worth looking into whether your GP thinks he should get the flu jag in future.
