Hiya, my poor little boy has chicken pox, god knows how he picked it up, but he has it terribly, he is absolutely covered in spots and the most unhappy I have ever seen him, he is grizzling constantly and its very out of character, the doctor saw him and seemed totally unconcerned, said to bath him three times a day and put nothing on them - can anyone offer any help or advice as to if there is anything we can do? Also will the spots scar his face? I'm full of anger right now that he has caught this, I know these things happen but it's so upsetting seeing him like this, he's so young it's just not fair.
Thanks in advance

DS2 caught the pox at the same age, on his Christening Day of all days! I was actually relieved that he had caught it at that age. We were in Ireland at the time. I just took him into the chemist and the pharmacist was brilliant. He recommended something to put in his bath that helped so much with the itching. I'm not sure if it helped with scarring but DS has none. I kept the packet to reccomend to others. I'll run upstairs and find it. BRB

It was this stuff It's about £10 but i managed to get three hotel sized baths out of it and it really did help. I think they do a baby version too although not sure what the difference is.

We used bicarbonate of soda in the bath which seemed to soothe the spots. I found e45 anti itch cream from boots really effective. The spots only scar if they are scratched but they do takes ages to fade away. My dd1 2.5 and dd2 7 months had them in the new year. Really horrible but DD2 was much better than DD1 who was way more vocal Grin. The spots only scar if they are scratched which didn't happen with dd2 but DD1 has a few scars where she itched a few.

My girlshave both had/currently got chicken pox. Dd2 has picked what can I usefor the scarring?!

Bicarb in the bath really really helped dd who was only little and very itchy. Keep an eye on his temp - calpol may help with that.

Dd has a couple of tiny scars - one her nose and one on her temple but you have to look for them iyswim. Ds has a big scar on his tummy because he scratched it badly. They both still have lots of marks all over their torso but I think they'll fade, they had them in november. Fwiw dd had about 100 spots on her wee face and they faded so quickly and she got over it much quicker than ds who was 4 at the time.

Boots sells Virasoothe which is claimed to reduce itchiness, unfortunately Piriton is only for 1 year and older. Aveeno (oath based products) are also good and most large Boots pharmacies stock them (don't think you need a prescription). You may be able to order online if you haven't got anyone to stay with your DS. If he feels very miserable, you may also want to give him some Calpol (does he have fever?).

Dd2 had it at that age. Really bad. Even in her mouth and soles of feet etc. Serious enough for the doctor to see her in the morning and come to check her later at home and phone to check the next day too. She had whole areas where the spots just merged into one big blob. She caught it from dd1, who had it very mildly.

She has loads of scars (now age 8) but only if you know where to look, no one else has noticed. Worst is one on her eyebrow. However bad it was at the time I've been glad on numerous occasions that she had it. When the notice goes up at preschool to say chickenpox is there, you can feel smug-or when someone phones to say 2 weeks before Christmas that their dd has just come out in it and they were playing together yesterday. Wink

Hmmm ... DeWe unfortunately you can get chicken pox repeatedly, so yes, you can get it again (and again). However, hopefully, if you get it the second time it will be (slightly) milder ....

I think it is very rare to get chickenpox twice IMO and from the research I have done, my dd got it very very badly nearly a year ago she is very badly scarred on her face and if she caught it again I don't know what we would do , we have only just started to feel a little better about it.

My gp told me that when you have had it you have life time immunity. I just had my immunity checked as I am pregnant and some of my dd's friends have it. I did have it as a child but wanted to be sure as the gp said sometimes parents can mistake other complaints for chickens pox such as hand, foot and mouth.
