ongoing bowel problems

My first born had terrible diarrhoea from birth which we were always told was due to my breast milk (we now know the same milk didn?t affect all the younger siblings).

Then it developed into toddler diarrhoea so by age 3 he was passing 10 or more loose stools a day which we were told was due to a high fruit, low fat diet and he would grow out of (again we now feel we were being fobbed off and think that it was not actually a low fat diet as he drank huge quantities of full fat cows milk and his siblings who had the same diet but with less cows milk by choice were unaffected).

At age 6 my DS was eventually diagnosed with faecal impaction without us ever having been aware that the bowel problems had changed from diarrhoea to constipation as there were never any signs of straining and the faecal impaction caused overflow diarrhoea. He has been on movicol since then and the impaction has cleared but is still left with no appetite and poor growth.

Has anyone else ever experienced this supposed change from diarrhoea to impaction either as a health care professional or with one of their children? We asked our paediatricians if they have come across it before and they said not but have never seemed concerned in finding a cause. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas for tests we might request? Just want to try to be sure nothing is being missed.

My first thought (as a totally non medical person you understand!) would be have you looked at food intollerances or allegies? loose stools or toddler diarrhoea are sometimes linked to an intollerance to cows milk - could a change in his gut as he got older mean that he is reacting to something in his diet another way?? (maybe worth a post on the allergies board to see if anyone has had similar experience)
Is he better or worse with certain foods?
and if you have 'poor growth' are you speaking to/been referred to a dietietian?
I'd be very unhappy that they weren't looking for a cause - whats their 'plan' do they think he'll have to be on movicol for the rest of his life? or will he grow out of it? Sorry no idea about tests but does seem like they haven't given you enough information or alternatives imo

i didnt know there was an allergies board, thanks for that tip. I have always wanted confirmation that it is not an intolerance. We have had coeliac test which came back negative as he has all the symptoms. I cant tell that certain foods make it worse as he really only eats wheat as food of choice with some fruit and cheese!

Yes we have seen dietician a few times, they are reluctant to advise removing any food as intake is already so limited and there is concern we wont be able to reintroduce that food group later if found to not be a problem. Apparently he gets enough nutrients from the limited food he eats according to the dietician but not enough calories and I am unsure if he absorbs it correctly.

He has been on high dose of movicol for over a year and we are advised will be needed for several years minimum, have had no success with reducing the dose.

Am keeping a food and drink log now and recording diarrhoea etc in hope to find a pattern.

Has anyone come across the type of symptoms my DS has especially from birth?
