Just found a lump

My DS is 5 and seems to have over the last week developed a lump in his neck, it's half way down on the right hand side, movable and about the size of a Karvol capsule.

I'm fairly sure it's not a gland and is obviously some terrible chile eating Cancer. I'm very worried and will take him to the doctor tomorrow as it's till there a week on.

Any ideas from the wise Mumsnetters...?

Not sure but I had the similar. The surgeon laughed because the scar would be bigger than the lump. It was just a little bit of grissle. Try not to worry too much.

Found something similar once in my breast. It was just a cyst that went away as quickly as it came. I had it checked though.
GP is likely to refer. Hope all will be well.

ds2 has a couple of these. We pointed them out to the paediatrician (sp?) who said they were blocked lymph nodes. Apparently they can take quite a long time to clear (a few months to a couple of years).

Hopefully your GP can set your mind to rest. Good luck!

My dd had the same a couple of years ago, little lump on the side of her neck about the size of a pea. We were on holiday at the time so I had an anxious wait, imagining the worst, before we could see our doctor.
The little lump was the result of a mild virus she had and was nothing to worry about, it lasted for a couple of weeks and just disappeared on its own.
Get it checked by your doctor tomorrow just to put your mind at rest.

my DS had similar and scared me witless - was an enlarged gland as a result of a virus, and nothing to worry about. Fingers crossed for you, I know any kind of swelling is scary x

(should add the GP referred us to a specialist, which frightened me even more but took the consultant about 5 seconds to say it was fine.... Think the GP just wanted a second opinion, so don't panic if your GP suggests seeing a specialist)

Thanks for all the advice, I'll let you know tomorrow how we've got on at the doctors.

Ok, so it's probably just viral and not child eating cancer. If it's not gone down by next week though, I'll have to go back.

Sometimes I feel so silly!

Wanted to add my ds has had this for two years and was referred to hospital last year by GP. Consultant put our minds at rest straight away just by feeling it. Said it's just a swollen lymph node that's never gone back down. He basically said it means he's working normally. He still has it, like a kidney bean half way down the side of his neck, no bigger, no smaller. I hope the GP puts your mind at rest.

lilolilmanchester · 16/02/2012 20:50

That's good news. No need whatsoever to feel silly. Those of us posting about lumps that turned out to be nothing have been through the panic. And sadly some parents do get the news they dread - no-one's going to call you silly on here x

(BTW, my son's swellings didn't go down very quickly at all, again, no need to panic, but GP might refer you at that point)

Op, there was a thread a few weeks ago on here almost identical to this, sorry I don't know how to attach a link but it should be easy to find. Lots of mums posted with similar stories of lumps in their child's neck.

Just to add that my DS is 3.9 now and his lump is still there. Been there nearly two years now and shows no sign of going down. One of the nursery staff where he goes says her 9 year old brother has had one since he was a toddler. Must be very common.

I remember going through six weeks of hell though from finding it to actually having my mind put at rest by the consultant so don't feel silly for worrying, it's totally normal. GP told me he was referring for suspected lymphoma which totally freaked me out. I cried with relief when the consultant (who was actually really irritated that he had been referred for suspected cancer) gave me the all-clear.
