How long after trying to find all the nits and putting the Hedrin on does it take for the itch to go away or does that mean there is still some lurking?

Found out yest we all have them (there's me thinking it's not nits cos you'd see them, think these ones have had sas training at hiding!)
Anyway, not sure if have got them all but done the conditioner thing and hedrin too and nitty gritty comb on its way from Amazon, but my head still feels itchy.

Is that because there's still some lurking or just their bites last a while?

Personally my DC haven't had them yet (too young) but I think that the second that you talk or think about them then you start to itch (I am actually itching me head now). When we were younger my mum would do conditioner with nit comb for a couple days after just in case.

Could also try a horrible electric thing that's basically a nit combe that electrocutes any nits its gets (it's horrible don't use it, it also zaps ears. Thinking about it, it could be used as a form or torture)

In my experience, if you're still itching, you've still got them, sorry. When you've properly got them all you stop itching within half an hour or so.

Hedrin's OK but it's not a miracle cure, you still need to follow up with conditioner and nit comb (NittyGritty comb is best) every other night, or every night if you've got the energy, until the itching completely stops.

EdithWeston · 15/02/2012 11:04

Yes, they're probably still there. You need to comb, comb, comb.

oneofsuesylvesterscheerios · 15/02/2012 11:10

We've had nits over & over as several parents in dd2s class are just not treating it and it's a right PITA. So we've tried most things. Best thing we've found is combing with nit comb when hair is conditioned and then also using the electric zapper comb in between. Comb was £20 but it's cheaper than constantly buying hedrin for £12 a bottle

Rikalaily · 15/02/2012 11:20

The itch tends to go pretty quickly so you probably still have them. I gave up on the treatments and just nitty gritty every day until the buggers are gone.

Elibean · 15/02/2012 11:39

Hedrin Once has got rid of them both times the dds and I have had them - admittedly, not a huge infestation, caught early.

Anything I found after that was no longer moving Smile

Nitty Gritty is great, though it does tear at hair somewhat. And my head itched on and off for at least a week after treating, though I never found another thing on it (combing nightly) - I think it was psychological Blush

I'm scratching just from reading this thread!

loopydoo · 15/02/2012 13:13

The NHS Head Lice Treatment leaflet says that the itch can last another 2-3 weeks after treatment.

turnipvontrapp · 15/02/2012 17:30

Thanks all, trouble is I can be very thorough with my boys as they all gave short hair but mine is shoulder length and doing your own is obviously harder to see.

Tried asking DH to have a go, think I will go see my mum and get her to go through it.

Still waiting for nitty gritty comb to arrive, the itch seems to be bumps so maybe it's their bites? Or maybe the bumps are them and they're stuck like glue to my head Sad euuurrrrrggghhh. Can't believe I've got them still!

And I thought I'd got them all the first time Angry

Just spent ages using the nitty gritty and finding more of the pesky nits. Will redo the Hedrin tonight.

Makes me itchy typing this!

I read great things about Nitty Gritty (designed by mums etc) but it was completely useless and didn't touch them.

DD's only departed after using Full Marks as well as much conditioner combing every few days afterwards.

turnipvontrapp · 19/02/2012 22:32

What's full marks? Is it like Hedrin?

All the boys seem to be nit free now after a few nitty gritty sessions, but not me with the longer hair, still getting itching, it's do hard to do your own.

Feel like they will never go Sad. And will be stuck nitty grittying for the rest of my life!
