Has anyone had experience of a tummy bug that has lasted 4 days? Feel this is never going to end for my poor DS

He started feeling ill teatime on Saturday, then went on to vomit early evening, continue in the early hours of Sunday morning, vomit a constantly through Sunday, then stop through Sun night, only to start again yesterday. He is so weak & poorly today & has been crying through the night. Gave flat coke as heard that was good, and he has just thrown the lot up.

We are on day 4 now. Surely he should be showing signs of improvement by now. My son is 8, so not a baby, but I have never seen him so poorly & weak & I am getting concerned. It feels like it will never end.Sad

If he is getting weak he may be dehydrated, it might be time to get him seen by a doctor.

Pinkchampagne · 14/02/2012 10:45

Took him to doctor yesterday, as I was worried about dehydration. He was very weak yesterday & I had to carry him into the doctors. (they couldn't fit me in for a home visit) Doctor said his tongue was still moist so he was not dehydrated. He then threw up bile as soon as we got out and then was sick again when we got home.

He has passed urine this morning, which is a good sign, but has just been very sick again. Everything I have read says to seek medical advice if symptoms go on for more than 48 hours. Four days with no improvement just doesn't seem right

He is sleeping again atm. His lips are very dry

What colour was his wee? That'll be a good indicator, should be straw coloured, if too dark he is needing fluid.
If he isn't keeping any fluid down I would personally take him to A & E. Hope he gets better soon.

Pinkchampagne · 14/02/2012 11:35

It was quite dark. Have just spoken to doctor I saw yesterday & he is coming to the house to take a look at him

hi my ds is always the same when he gets a tummy bug usually lasts a week on and off just as you think he's over it starts up again the gp told me its grumbling gastric virus and to just keep fluids in in for 24 hrs then introduce once the vomitting stops slowly not very nice for them hope he's better soon

feel your pain.. my 14mo dd is also suffering similarly. I took her to the Dr's yesterday and he said it could last up to 14 days ! Feel totally helpless. Only tip he could give me was avoid dairy and obviously just keep food as plain as possible.. little and often.

I sympathise! Ds, 3.9, started being sick on Thurs, progressed to diarrhea, then nothing really as refused to eat, barely drank anything, so nothing to poo or sick out Sad was a real battle to get fluids in and slept a lot ( hasn't napped since 2.5 ). He kept taking himself off upstairs to bed to watch endless Fireman Sam and to sleep. I went up to check on him yesterday to find him so sound asleep it freaked me a bit! I called the Duty Doctor as was so concerned about him and also have DD, 15mths, with D&V. However the Duty Doctor didn't call back until 6pm ( had called at 12pm ) and in that time Ds suddenly made a remarkable recovery. He appeared downstairs at 4pm and was back dancing in his pants at 5pm. Hmm Hopefully your son will make a similar recovery.

DD started being sick on Saturday night and it seems to be just diarrhea now. The poor thing is exhausted, just wanting to sleep, crying in pain when she's awake, wanting to eat but then not. Sad It's so awful to see her. She's gone from being nicely covered to looking so skinny. ( DS was a stick insect to start with so now looks like he's not been fed for a few months. )

The Duty Doctor did say not to feed DD for another 24hrs but tbh, she's not the sort of child you can starve. He recommended a low/non-fibre diet, diluted juice with a pinch of salt to rebalance things and bring her in if she is still bad in 24hrs.

I hope your Ds is ok and the GP was helpful. I'll be so glad when this bug has left our house. My house stinks to high heaven of poo. Bleurgh! Blush

Sorry to hear others have experienced similar. It really is the pits, isn't it?Sad

Doctor has been round & checked him over. He couldn't find anything other than a high temp, so wants me to get him checked over in hospital this afternoon. He said they will do blood tests etc. Feel very worried now.Sad

Try ice pops for rehydration they are pretty good.

OneHandFlapping · 14/02/2012 13:43

DS1 used to be like this. Bugs that other children got over in 24 hours lasted 7 days for him. I used to give him sugar water - saturated sugar solution, which at least used ot make the sick taste better for him, and soemtimes helped settle his stomach, and encourage him to have constant sips of cooled boiled water. It didn't matter if he puked it all up again - just keep sipping more.

We managed to get through this trying period (which lasted pretty much throughout primary school) and now he is a strapping 18 year old, and seems to get no iller than anyone else.

Doctors scoffed when I took him to see them, and seemed to think it was quite common. It's bad luck when you're the parent of one of these kids.

HappyJoyful · 15/02/2012 11:09

pinkchampagne, do hope the hospital appointment went ok ? It's so miserable..my GP said they had done lots of test for Noro Virus and there was lots of it about, can last up to 14 days.
Seems like my dd made a similar recovery to another posters so hopefully everyone's babies will perk up soon

TheAvocadoOfInteriorDesign · 15/02/2012 11:13

There's a 4-day sickness bug doing the rounds near us at the moment. DD (16m) started vomiting at 3am on Friday, followed up by diarrhoea for the next couple of days and both on Monday. We were very very careful with what she ate on Tue and now she seems to be getting better although she's very tired. Thank the Lord she's still breastfed though, otherwise she couldn't keep anything down.

Pinkchampagne · 15/02/2012 21:20

Reassuring to hear there are normal bugs around that last for days on end as was getting very concerned that he didn't seem to be getting any better.

Hospital just got fluids in him & made sure he was keeping them down before discharging us. He was crying out with tummy pains when we got home, but guess that is to be expected with these bugs.
We were doing well & had managed 24 hours vomit free (although he was very windy and quiet & lathargic), then his dad took over looking after him while I went for an appointment, and went & gave him a doughnut of all things!! You can imagine the rest...We seem back to square 1!Confused

Sorry to hear you are back to square one :(. DS2 had a terrible tummy bug that lasted over a week once, daily visits by doc to check for dehydration etc in the end he started giving him meds to get rid of it (can't remember what now). I found with DS that the only thing he wanted to eat/drink when he finally started eating/drinking was cucumber which was great for getting him hydrated again.

Pinkchampagne · 15/02/2012 22:35

You just don't expect a tummy bug to last more than a day or two, do you? It really feels like this illness is never going to end for him.Sad

Dd went back to square one on Monda after gobbling some chocolate brownie. On Tue we let her have only banana and white bread and water. She kept it all down and is back to normal food today and much happier. Hope your Ds gets well soon.

Pinkchampagne · 16/02/2012 08:57

He still seems so poorly in himself. Very weak & sleepy. Thinking of speaking to doctor again but don't want to come across as an over paranoid mother
