Severe Meconium Aspiration Syndrome

Hi There,

I am starting this thread to see if there is anyone on here in a similar situation that can offer any help/ advice or support. After a near-on perfect pregnancy,my first child was born ten days late in July. Despite having meconium stained waters I was left to continue with my 47 hour (??) labour without intervention and eventually gave birth to a seemingly healthy baby boy. After a few hours it became apparent that his breathing was laboured and he was admitted into the SCBU for tests. Long story short, my son was diagnosed with Meconium Aspiration Syndrome and remained in hospital for a further month.

He is now 7 months old and despite no longer having an infection in his lungs,he is STILL dependant on 0.2 litres of oxygen 24 hours a day. As time is wearing on the shock of having a "sick baby" is being replaced by so many questions! How did this happen? Is there anyone else out there who has suffered the same problems? Every support group for babies dependant on home oxygen is aimed at parents of premature babies and I'm finding so little information out there. It is so frustrating to look at my seemingly healthy boy and wonder how this happened?

I would really appreciate hearing from anybody who has a situation remotely similar. Every day I am thankful that my baby boy is alive and developing well but sometimes I really do get angry with the situation and would like to hear I am not alone in this :-(

Hi Kalisi
My baby was born 2 weeks ago with MAS. He is still in hospital two weeks later. We spent a week at Glenfield in Leicester where he got ECMO treatment and now are in UCLH in London where he is on oxygen treatment. We aren't sure yet when we will be bringing him home and if he will be on oxygen therapy when we do that. I can't find any support groups anywhere for this situation. Have you found anything? I also can't stop thinking about how this happened and trying to figure out how my low risk utterly boring pregnancy went so completely wrong with my baby almost dying at birth and still being very sick.

Perhaps you could try contacting the Pals service at Great Ormond Street hosp as they care for lots of babies who have had meconium aspiration requiring ECMO there. I don't really know if this is the right department (they are the patient liason service) but it is a good starting point and I think they would hopefully be able to give you some useful information.
I hope you get some help and support.

Kara
Really sorry to hear about your baby. Really hope he is improving.

Hugs for you all.

Wow it's been a while since I have written on here! My son is now 13 months old and completely free from oxygen. He is perfectly healthy and shows no signs of his past problems. I just thought I would check in to say there is light at the end of the tunnel and although all the while you are living it, the situation seems endless there will be a day when you look back and can barely remember it. Kara, I really hope your little one is doing well and if unfortunately, he was sent home on oxygen therapy I'm here to offer any support you may need. It really isn't the end of the world but it's fucking hard and I wish i had known someone else in the situation whilst I was living it!
