ds has been around the 9 kg Mark for 5 months but when ever he goes over it he's Ill.
He was weighed on thursday over it and Friday in a&e as his temp wouldn't come down.
Anyone same experience? Dr being dik won't do what I'm saying he's got a nice long letter from me so if he doesn't change I'm changing drs.

Also ds temp was 39+ and his hands were blue. :|
Again anyone know why or have you ever had the same experience?
Thanks

I'm not sure I undersatand your point re the doc not doing what you say.

Re the blue hands its most likely because due to the fever all of the heat was being focused on his internal organs and the extremities get quite cold in that situation. Once the fever lessened I presume his hands returned to normal?

Is he actually underweight? What centile is he on for weight and height? I don't think going over 9kg has anything to do with him being ill, I mean presumably he was over it for a while before he was actually weighed iyswim. Do you weigh him yourself? If so, why? Genuine question.

susssiq · 13/02/2012 10:14

does depend on how his growth since birth has been but 9kg is very light for a one and a half yr old. have you tried cutting milk products out for a while or gluten maybe that he is intolerant and it is inhibiting his nutrition uptake. Good idea changing docs if they don't want to do anything at all. As for fever and blue hands not sure the two things are connected so wouldn't be concerned if it was a one off and with a fever.

larrygrylls · 13/02/2012 10:20

Faz,

I totally see where you are coming from, although it would be helpful if you said what you wanted your doc to do. I don't think it is normal to have blue hands with a fever at all. I have never had them, nor has anyone I know. I believe it does happen to some children when they have a fever but I think that it is a symptom that definitely warrants a doctor's visit.

It is normal to weigh one's children when they look thin and sickly. Left, if you have never been in that position, you are lucky.

I think that sometimes children do just get unlucky and enter a vicious cycle of infection, poor nutrition, weakened immune system, infection etc. I think this can happen in winter. OTOH, if my baby had put on no weight for 5 months and was repeatedly ill, I would ask for a paediatric referral, to put my mind at rest that there was no sinister underlying cause.

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 13/02/2012 10:29

Larry - yes I have been in that position with ds, sadly. What I meant by my question was is he seeing HCPs and getting weighed because he's already having 'treatment' or is OP weighing him at home with no support from HCPs. Please don't make assumptions.

He's got severe gastric reflux, Food aversion, meningitis and Septcemia when younger.
He's been under consultant since 2 months of age. Once a mOnth atleast he's Ill. He is now under children's hospital and has a appointment next month.
I asked dr to refer ds to Sheffield children's hosp to see the gastric pead.
He wont refer due to cost and what not. I have said he needs referring as it's taking his toll on the both of us. He hasn't had half meal since Friday.

He has to be weighed with hv every 2 weeks.

Does that help?
Sorry I should of mentioned all the info.
Thanks

We tried the milk free baby milk when he was 4 months old and he came out in a rash with that milk.
He is on cow and gate 1-2 years milk. Consultant has said to try milk free diet but I don't know what to do about the milk

I'm so sorry you're going through all this. Fwiw I don't think its that unusual to be ill once a month, my ds who is now 5 was ill almost constantly from oct - xmas and dd who is also 17m has been ill almost constantly for about a month including a pretty much constant temp - not as extreme as 40 ish though.

No more advice sorry other than like pp saiod see your HV maybe?

fazsaeed · 13/02/2012 13:05

Weight
I've got my growth charts out.
9kg at 17 months is 2nd centile, so within normal.
9kg at 12 months is between the 9 and 25 centile.
I would say thats not a massive drop, and probably caused by the rounds of illness your getting HOWEVER it sounds like you've had a rough start in life, so it is worth following up. What centile was he born on? That would also affect my analysis of weight change.

Weight gain does slow now - my LO has put on 3kg in 2 years, and has followed his (25th) centile line. Nearly 3ys now.

Dairy free
We did this for a while (suspect sensitivity to milk). I was bf, so I cut out all dairy also. Below is what we did, but I'd recommend trying to get a dietician appointment.
We were advised to use oat milk where substituting. I made milky mains and puddings at home using this, but we didn't drink milk. You can get dairy free marg also. We just didn't eat cheese, and made biscuits etc using the marg (you need to read the labels on everything to avoid all dairy - milk, casein, whey are all found and mean milk derived). To up the calorie content, I roasted veg in oil rather than boiled. We also got through a lot of eggs and avocados.
If your going to do it, do it properly, and avoid everything dairy. And give it at least a month to see what happens.
Keep an eye on your calcium intake - google for non dairy sources. Green veg is good.
Got to go, boys kicking off
Good luck

Thanks for the info.
He was in-between 75-50 I think.
We got a call from the hosp refferal line and they have managed to reffere him to the consultant I wanted. Which is brilliant. I need to ring for the appointment. I was willing to pay today for him to be seen. We were arranging an appointment and then the call came through. It makes the process a whole lot simpler. We will have to travel on hour to get there but it's worth it.
