Is this a water infection? What should I do?

Since her first wee this morning DD (almost 3yo, potty trained plus night nappy) has been complaining of pain every time she has a wee. She has had a cold for ca. 3 weeks now, but no temperature. Could this be a water infection? Should I take her to the walk in centre with a wee sample or wait and see if it resolves by itself?
She's never had anything worse than a cold, and my mum's answer to everything has always been homeopathy, a route I'm not keen to take at the moment.

lots of fluid. And I mean lots. Cranberry juice if she will drink it (dilute it) and it should right itself.
If it still hurts in a couple of days then GP. I find walk in centres tend to hand out antibiotics and if you can get rid of the infection without them you're not dealing with thrush as well!

Thanks, that's very helpful already. So the aim is not to take antibiotics?
(My mum, again, is completely against them, which makes it very hard for me to know what's reasonable and what's an 'antib.s for every sniffle' attitude!)

well, antibiotics are bloody useful so its best to save them to serious infections or you get resistance. A mild urinary infection the body's own immune system can deal with. If it got more serious then yes, antibiotics. But best to be avoided if you can as they can make a child vomit, tummy ache, thrush etc.
They are great drugs IMO but most mild infections dont need them.

I agree antibiotics are great in general. DD has never needed them, and I've only had to use them a few times in my life, so want to make sure they're definitely needed or not. Didn't know they could make children quite so ill!

Luckily DD has been a tiny bit better, probably thanks to drinking lots and lots. Phew!

glad she is on the mend. 3 of my kids have never had antibiotics (they are all adults) now. Poor dd has had loads and vomits each and everytime. If they werent for pneumonia we wouldnt use them Sad
