Constant colds in 5 year old - is this normal?

She gets one every 2 weeks, we started one yesterday and that is another weekend ruined. She is streaming and coughing up snot throughout the night. We get little sleep in these alternate weeks. She had an ear infection 10 days ago and now says it hurts again. I'm at the end of my tether. She started school in September and has had one or two days off on these weeks. When I take her to the Dr I get a sympathetic face accompanied by a standard sentence about the immune system not being developed at this age. I have had to give up a college course as I went over the minimum attendance requirement in the first term! Her 3 year old sister gets about 3 colds a year despite being showered with sneezes and having soggy tissues thrown at her. Is there such a thing as a sicky kid who will always get ill? She was BF for a couple of weeks and her sister was FF.
She also spends the summer on piriton as she has hayfever which started when we moved to this house (lots of trees around) is then affected by the leaf mould in the autumn. Poor little bugger. I keep her home on the day after she has lost the night's sleep and if she feels well enough the next day I send her in. The last three colds the school have sent her home on the next day. She should be running around having fun with her mates but she looks knackered and run down. Would a pro-biotic help? I can't give her echinacea because of the hayfever. I'll try anything!

I've had similar with both of mine.

First year mixing with lots of new germs I'd say. It should get easier

What about trying a Tonic like Minadex? I've had to start giving it to my DS as he's been suffering a lot lately too.

I sympathise. Especially with the college course. My DD was the same and I'd have ended up losing my job if I hadn't had such a wonderful boss.

Did your DD go to preschool? If school is the first socialisation en masse that she's participated in, you'll probably find that this settles down soon. It's extremely common for children to have a six-month-period of constant illnesses once they start nursery or school.

However, if this is ongoing and she also has regular ear infections, I'm surprised she hasn't been referred to ENT. You could ask for this. I had to ask for a second opinion about my DD at my surgery before I got my referral, but once my DD was seen at ENT they said she had one of the worst cases they'd seen and that she should have been referred ages ago.

Good luck.
