10 month old - recurring sick bug, losing weight

Hi all, my 10 month old son is on his 4th sick bug since end of December - each time it lasts around 4/5 days where all food comes back up (projectile!) unless it's small bits of dry cheerios/rice cake etc and can only keep tiny amounts of milk down (no more than 3 lots of 3oz a day).

I went to one doc who said because he's been fine in-between bouts of sickness he can only assume that he's been unlucky and caught a few doses really close together. This seems strange to me as my 3 year old daughter had the first one but none of the others. But it's also strange that he's fine for a week and then it begins again, another 4/5 days of not being able to stomach anything.

I went to another doc today for 2nd opinion and they gave me pot for stool sample to check if lactose intolerant. I saw the health visitor this afternoon and she said firstly that seems strange as he's been fine up till now, but we also found out he's lost a lot of weight - he weighs less now than he did in Nov when we last weighed him, gone from 98th percentile to under 50th.

I've made another apmnt to see doc again on Monday to discuss this, just wondered if anyone had any words of wisdom in the meantime??

Thanks for any advice/info x

Sometimes when DCs have had a bug it affects the "flora and fauna" of the gut and they become temporarily lactose intollerant.

DD2 had a bug that went on and off for about a month on when she was little. I tok her to the doctors quite a few times until finally a different GP we suggested this possible lactose problem and suggested a lactose free diet for a week.

We took her off all dairy and it worked!

Might not be that- would ask a GP but still might be worth a try- you can get goats and soya milk in liquid and powdered form

I should add we only did the lactose free for a week- it wasn't a permanent thing.

Have a look here for some more information.

Thanks so much for that link, makes a lot more sense now as a possible solution. Did you experience the weight loss issue?

I would insist on being referred to a paediatrician. It might be nothing serious, but you just don't know. It is a huge wait drop at this age (especially given that he is on solids).

My DD was sick on and off (just like you described seemed fine for five days or so then sick again then fine etc.etc.) for over a month and she did lose weight but when we discovered the lactose thing she picked right up again.

I would see the GP again and perhaps asked to be referred to a paediatrician and try the lactose thing in the meantime.
