anyone know about verrucas?

DD (11yo) showed me her foot last night.
She has had a couple of verrucas before, but nothing like this, on one of her big toes, it is covered on the underneath with about 20 verrucas, then there are more dotted round both feet!!

So i soaked her feet in the bath and rubbed with a pumice stone and that got a couple off, but made some of them bleed :-(
Then i put some ointment on that i used last time, but it seemed like such a lot to be putting on.

I just feel so awful for her, it must be really painful, and guilty that I didnt spot it sooner.

DS2 had a lot and I didn't notice Sad. I took him to the chiropodist. She gave us some liquid to put on twice a day and it got rid of them.

You can get stuff to put on them that helps get rid of them - bazuka I think it's called, but if there are a lot, I'd be tempted to take her to see a chiropodist/podiatrist to get them dealt with.
They are highly contagious too, so no walking round the house with bare/wet feet or you may get them too.

Sparklingbrook · 10/02/2012 13:35

Yes, agree with Beamur. If DS had had a couple I would have had a go but there were so many I felt we needed a professional.

Thankyou, I didnt realise you could go to a chiropodist with verrucas.
The ointment I have is salycyclic acid (or something like that). I wonder if a chiropodist would freeze them off.
I took her to a dr once with a wart on her hand, and he said that they would be reluctant to freeze warts on a child as it's painful, but there is such a lot i dont know where to start.

A chiropodist can do it with much more accuracy - treating lots of verrucas with salycyclic acid will probably be quite sore. I did just one with DD that way and she complained a great deal.

Sparklingbrook · 10/02/2012 13:59

No, it definitely wasn't freezing. It was a clear liquid twice a day with a bit of filing. The liquid did turn them brown though. Sad

It's many years ago, but I had one removed by a chiropodist and think they used an acid type gel, left it on a week then removed the dead skin with a scalpel. I suspect they will have access to more concentrated treatments than you can get over the counter and can use more precise instruments to cut out the diseased skin.

Sparklingbrook · 10/02/2012 14:03

There was a scalpel involved but DS2 didn't report any pain. Grin

flipflopper · 10/02/2012 14:05

ooh, not sure i would be able to watch!
Thankyou, i will ring a chiropodist.

Good luck flipflopper Smile

Beamur · 10/02/2012 14:06

Having mine cut off with a scalpel didn't hurt, but me poking around my daughters foot apparently did!

suchnonsense · 10/02/2012 14:12

Ouch - poor soul. I had this when I was about the same age; apparently some children are just very prone. I used to try to dig them out myself, which I suspect was the worst thing to do as it broke the skin and spread the virus around (disclaimer: no idea if that's true, but it was certainly painful!). Anyway, after various rubbish and ineffective treatments at the local GP's "wart-clinic", what finally worked was a few bouts of freezing, followed by daily filing and painting with salicylic acid (sp?). It took a while (a few months I think), but it definitely worked, and a gradual improvement started almost immediately.
I then had a couple of warts on my hand in my teens (just exactly what you need as a teenage girl!). Same treatment worked just as well.
Absolutely nothing since, so I think I'm now officially immune.
Good luck!
