Go to chemist get anti nit shampoo. They include a comb follow the instructions job done.

hewlettsdaughter · 08/02/2012 18:17

Yes, that's the comb. There are other combs but the nitty gritty one works well (and doesn't break, like the cheaper plastic combs I tried). You put conditioner on the hair, then comb from root to tip, every three days or so until the lice - and eggs - have gone.

hewlettsdaughter · 08/02/2012 18:20

Or, as kerala says, you can get some special shampoo. I tried Hedrin on my dd's hair recently (as I hadn't kept up with the combing and we were going to the hairdressers), but unfortunately it didn't completely kill them. Don't know if I didn't do it thoroughly enough.

Seona1973 · 08/02/2012 19:39

our tesco sells the nitty gritty comb (but I dont like it!). I use a different metal toothed comb instead along with something like hedrin as I like to kill them as well as get them out

goingbacktowork · 08/02/2012 19:59

right have hedrined the children but it seems that it is only ever about 50% successful from the posts on here. Is there anythingn else I could be doing in tandem. Just denitted my son and it is one of the yuckiest thigs I have done - it was like defleaing a dog!

best thing to do is just get in the habit of combing once a week. nitty gritty is the best as the grooves slice the eggs off the hair shaft, normal style combs can be too wide toothed so the eggs slip though and stay in the hair. it's the eggs you need to get. most treatments only kill the lice, but all that will happen is they'll get re-infested when the eggs hatch.

goingbacktowork · 08/02/2012 22:13

ok going to buy a nitty griitty now! Does anyone know which shops sell them? If I can@t walk in and buy will need to order online (so a bit of delay).

boots have them. i use it with any bog standard supermarket tea tree conditioner (lice are not supposed to like the smell of tea tree)

goingbacktowork · 09/02/2012 10:44

Right got comb from Boots.Thanks. So need to do the conditioner thing every day for a week (or just every few days?) and then do the second Hedrin treatment? Is that right?

Also the children slept with towels on the pillows yesterday - shall I change the pilllow cases every day on the beds now until after the second treatment?

I am sitting at work itching myself now though we have checked and I do not appear to have them. Wink

personally, i would nit comb every other day for a week to make sure they are nit free, then just do once a week as a precaution. don't know about hedrin, i've always just done it via nit combing.

mumnosbest · 14/02/2012 22:57

I teach reception/foundation and have a big nit problem. School nurse advises parents to comb hair every day with a nit comb and comb through conditioner regularly. Lice become immune to the shampoos you can buy. I follow this advice with my DCs ( and me Blush ) and haven't had any problems

notveryinventive · 14/02/2012 23:02

Im with you goingbacktowork DS and DD1 had lice last week and we noticed them again today (though not as much as before). Tis very annoying. They have gone to bed with Hedrin on (the one we've got says to leave for at least 8 hours) which we will wash out tomorrow. Then Ive got a nit comb for the rest of it. Looks like I have another sunday night job (once Ive done it every other day for a week) to do. My head hasnt stopped itching since last week, but neither me nor DH can see anything aggggghhhhhhhh

cory · 16/02/2012 08:31

I hope you are nit combing yourself and dh too. Absolutely no point unless everybody gets done: the nits will just shelter in your hair and jump back to dcs when you put the nit comb away. I'd do the whole family every night for a week and wash all pillow cases.

spanky2 · 16/02/2012 08:37

We used full marks, it dehydrates them and is oily like a hot oil treatment so ds1's hair is lovely and shiny. I've been nit combing with conditioner everyday. It is the first time and it goes on the list of disgusting things you never thought you would do!

goingbacktowork · 16/02/2012 09:01

right we are a week in. They have not gone. Hedrined for second time last night and still lots of nits. Not sure what to do now!

RueDeWakening · 16/02/2012 10:09

I bought something called a Robicomb, you stick a battery in it and it electrocutes the little buggers. Tis very satisfying! Comb was about £20, it makes a high pitched whining noise and every time it zaps something the whine cuts out for a second.

You can get strong nit treatment on prescription if you have a real problem with it, I had to do that a couple of years ago for DD.

Seona1973 · 16/02/2012 11:46

are you still seeing live lice? The empty egg sacs are white and will be glued to the hair shaft. Just because there are egg sacs there doesnt mean that they still have lice. The second application is needed in case any eggs have hatched since the last time you treated - you then kill them before they are mature enough to reproduce

goingbacktowork · 17/02/2012 10:25

yes live lice.

Tequilamockinbird · 17/02/2012 10:33

There's really nothing else you can do, IME, except comb and comb and comb some more!

DD had really long, thick hair and I used to sit combing conditioner through for hours to make sure they'd all gone.

You need to comb the same piece of hair over and over before moving on to the next bit. Section it all out with butterfly clips first.
