Hi all,
My DS is 10 months and always has such a sore bottom. Firstly I'm not sure why but mostly could I please pick your brains for ways to treat it please? He gets lots of tiny open sores, only around the anus, nowhere else. I have tried sudocrem, hydrocortisone, stellaria from Neals yard and Vaseline. It sometimes clears up for a day or so but quickly comes back. No signs thrush or infection.
Thanks.

Metanium. It's bloody brilliant.

SpottyTeacakes · 06/02/2012 18:58

Yep Metanium seems to be the best

ReneeVivien · 06/02/2012 18:59

Metanium here too - it is fantastic (but stains like a bastard - do NOT get it on any fabric).

And fresh air - let him go without a nappy whenever you can (on a towel, obviously).

If that doesn't work, I'd be taking him to the GP.

Brilliant, thank you. First job tomorrow!

I use benpanthen which i really like and seems very effective.

Shakey1500 · 07/02/2012 10:00

Another one for Metanium. Fab stuff.

Egg white. It really works as well!

You need to kind of slop it on and then waft around the area to let it dry a bit or else bits of fluff and carpet will stick Grin

I also used that nipple cream in the purple tube (whatsit called again?) which was really effective.

As much bum-to-air time as possible, use cotton wool and warm water instead of wipes for a few days, try changing your wipes/nappy brand (if you use disposables), even when you think it looks 'better' always use a barrier cream like sudocream.

Encourage him to drink more water so that his urine is not concentrated.

Are you sure it's not thrush? It gets open sores, like a raised spot which pits in the middle, the area around it gets red and sometimes shiny (if the skin gets shiny it can form tiny cracks too). Might be worth trying canesten or datarin with a barrier cream over the top for a few weeks just to see if it improves, it comes back really quickly unless you use the cream for a week or two after it seems to have completely gone.

Dd3 has it mildly in the crack of her bum and a little at the front atm, the pitting spots were the give away, the redness was only a small area at the front, we are using a tiny amount of dactarin rubbed in well with zinc & castor oil cream over the top and it was much improved within a few days of starting the thrush cream, nothing else helped it.

lynlynnicebutdim · 07/02/2012 13:41

My DD is the queen of nappy thrush and i agree that such a localised rash like that, with specific red spots as opposed to a general irrititation sounds like thrush to me.

We used Cloromitrzole 1% in the first instance. If that doesnt have an effect (you can usually tell if it is working within the first day) then we used Daktarin and if that doesnt work the GP prescribes a broad spectrum antifungal cream called Timodene.

I have found that if empty a tube of daktarin and mix with the same amount of a firm (consistancy of sudocream) castor oil and zinc oxide cream the thrush heals up very quickly as the cream stays on the skin better and is not rubbed off by the nappy.

I'm thinking thrush, too.

Lots of Air time, fairly hot baths, and ... glycerin smeared on overnight. Honey also supposed to work just as well. Don't ask me why.

When DS was in the neonatal intensive care the nurses recommended bepanthen for the little one's nappy rashes.

It worked wonders for DS when I used it at home. Plus lots of nappy free time

BlackSwan · 07/02/2012 14:09

Bepanthen. Excellent stuff.
