Conjunctivitis

Hi,

DS is a year old and I'm pretty certain he has conjunctivitis. He starts at the childminder next week and her policy is to take them if they've started treatment.

What would be the best plan of action to get him help over the weekend? Pharmacist? OOH doc or walk in centre?

Thanks!

If he has green gunk coming out then it'll be bacterial in which case he'll need ABs-so I guess OOH or walk-in centre.

DD had it 6 months ago and the doctor told me to just bathe it in clean water and cotton wool. He said that unless her eyeball became very red and inflamed then we didn't need to see him. It was quite severe too, really swollen around it and sticky. It cleared in about a week when she passed it onto her sister in time for Xmas perhaps check with a pharmacist if there is anything to help? Hope he gets better soon!

I've been a bit suspicious for a day but its only tonight that there was true green gunk and the inner corner of his eye is really red :(

Nhs recommends doing nothing, it will heal itself. And strongly discourages use of antibiotics.

If you are breastfeeding squirt some milk in, that's pretty effective.

If your child minders policy is that your best bet is just to treat it any way, chemist won't prescribe drops to under 2yrs so maybe ring out if hours and explain situation xx

FelixDaSouza · 04/02/2012 09:22

Bathe it with some cooled boiled water and give OOH a ring.

You can't buy the treatment over the counter for babies.

If you are breast feeding squirt some milk in his eyes. Works a treat. Seriously!

Hope he gets better soon, it's horrible. Smile

Thanks everyone, we got some stuff from the OOH doc today but he said not to use them unless it's not improved by tomorrow night, and to carry on with boiled water.

That's good. I found the easiest way to get the stuff in was to wait till my kids were asleep then lift their eyelid and squeeze it in then kind if gently massage the eye with my little finger. It's not easy getting them into a wriggly 1 year old. Hope it's all cleared up soon. Smile

my ds2 has conjuctivitis, he is 5 months old and the doc wont give us anything as its viral, not bacterial, has had since sat, is starting to clear now.

GodisaDj · 07/02/2012 09:02

Dd has it at the moment. We've been prescribed chloramphenicol eye drops 0.5%. you can buy over the counter but they'll ask if child is under two. Dd's is quite bad but dr said drops would be ok 4x a day. between the drops, breast milk in her eyes and cleaning with cotton wool it seems to be clearing up

Funnily enough, mil suggested normal milk too as they use this with the residents in the care home she works in. Dr suggested breast milk or normal milk too- must have soothing properties Grin

Sorry dd is only 6 months so can't see why they wouldn't prescribe to an older child
