AS the title suggests my child has had a persistent hoarse voice since having chicken pox before xmas. I took her to the doctors today and she said she had swollen glands but no sign of infection and if it stays hoarse to bring her back in 3 weeks for a referral to ENT. I googled her symptoms and have frightened myself with things like leukemia or lymphoma rare I know but worrying all the same. I think what is playing on my mind is that she has had 2 nosebleeds at night over the course of a couple of months which I know is not a lot but has worried me. Anyone have any experience of hoarseness in children and can put my mind at rest. Many Thanks.

I'd be interested in what the rest of your DD was like, not just her hoarse voice!
Eating/drinking/growing well? Giggling and getting into mischief? A twinkle in her eye and spring in her step? Or not? Any swollen glands anywhere else eg armpits and groin?
The rare and scary diseases you have been googling would be unlikely to niggle on for a month or so..children frequently get very sick, very quickly with such things.
Sounds as if your GP has a fair plan.

I like what timetosmile says. My DS3 had a hoarse voice from July/Aug last year, when it was still going in Oct we had a referral, I was terrified even though I managed to step away from Mr Google. Long and short of it is; he had a tiny camera down his throat and he's got some small rough patches on his vocal chords, some speech therapy to go and hopefully he will be fine by the coming summer. Good luck.

Thankyou for your reassurance! She seems well in herself eating well and plenty energy. I know I am probably panicking but I was expecting google to come up with tonsillectemy or some such and when it brought up leukemia etc. I just worried I was overlooking something. Thanks again.

I had a hoarse voice last year for about three months and was diagnosed with a virus of my vocal cords - apparently very common after another illness or infection. I was told at the time by my GP not to google as simple infections or viruses were the most likely cause

ChiefPotterer · 02/02/2012 23:22

Thanks gingergran google is a pain! I thought it might be something with her vocal chords as she has developed quite a high pitched voice with it!.

just don't worry too much (easy to say i know) and long as the wait may be i can tell you from experience that if they were really concerned she would be seen quicker

Hi chief Poterer
My 3 yr old facing same problem of hoarse voice and we got referral for ent specialist but it is after one month ... so i am worried a lot.. hows ur child now . What the Doctor said to u .

BarbarianMum · 14/04/2018 14:13

There is no symptom of childhood illness that I have ever googled that doesn't bring up leukemia as a possibility. Not one. Odd rashes, mystery aches and pains, recurrent infections, whatever. So yes, keep an eye on it but it's not time to worry about that yet.

Worriedalways · 15/04/2018 03:25

Ok Thanks for your reply ...but cant wait till ENT’s appointment . Coz sons voice is hoarse since last two months

FoodieToo · 15/04/2018 17:49

My son had a hoarse voice for about a year when he was 3. We put it down to the fact that he was a very loud child!!
If your child is otherwise well I woudln't worry at all.

Worriedalways · 15/04/2018 22:32

Foodie too ... thanks ... hope this is the case with my son too ...

Yazeee · 06/04/2022 13:54

@Worriedalways hi just wondering if everything was ok with your son in the end. My 2.5 year old daughter has had a hoarse voice on and off the last 2.5 months and we’re waiting to see ent but just wondering if I can find out more info here. Thanks.

Aklein38 · 01/03/2025 18:59

@Yazeee what was the outcome for your daughter. My son has had a hoarse voice for the last 5 weeks. Started after a viral infection. Took him to GP who said lymph nodes were up and to give it another 3 weeks. Terrified it's something more serious!

Yazeee · 01/03/2025 21:46

@Aklein38 my daughter had a hoarse voice for almost a year… She had an appointment with ENT at the hospital but I ended up not taking her because her voice started improving by then and there was nothing else wrong with her… She is now 5.5 years old and sounds absolutely fine. She still gets a hoarse voice when she gets the cold but it never lasts for long. This caused me soooo much stress and anxiety so I understand your worry. Keep an eye and I hope your little one improves soon.
