Nits in a one year old

I think dd, 13 months, has nits. Pharmacist says Full Marks can only be used on over 2s and I need to see gp for something suitable. What have you done for this? I don't really believe in natural remedies for nits - nuke 'em!

Why would you nuke them when it doesn't work and Hedrin, for example, does? And what do you mean you think he has nits? It's not hard to know whether he does or not!

tabulahrasa · 30/01/2012 21:56

Hedrin's fine to use and works better than full marks - if you can see headlice, she's got them... what makes you unsure?

Catz1 · 30/01/2012 22:01

You will know if he has them! Light brown moving sesame seeds! Good blob conditioner and fine comb is all you need.

fluffygal · 30/01/2012 22:15

No nit treatments work on our house, you can still see them moving after treatment! We just condition and comb every night for 7 days the every other day for the next 7 days, gets rid of them.

fluffygal · 30/01/2012 22:17

On our house? I would need a bloody big bottle! In our house!

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 30/01/2012 22:18

Nittygritty comb and liberal use of conditioner.

tabulahrasa · 30/01/2012 22:23

fluffygal, have you tried Hedrin? I've had ones that don't kill them before, but Hedrin suffocates them with silicon rather than poisoning them - so they can't get immune to it.

I sound like a Hedrin salesman, lol, but it was the only thing that finally worked and if they get reinfected while you're still combing to get eggs out you can use it again

wildpoppy · 30/01/2012 22:32

Thanks all. I think she has them because she's been scratching behind ears and at nape of neck (as have I but only once I started thinking about it), but when I look I can't see any. She has blonde hair so eggs would be hard to see but not seen any lice either. She is a wiggly one year old so comb is easier said than done.

you shouldnt treat until you find a live louse so do a proper check first. Hedrin can be used from 6 months according to the hedrin website

Denj33 · 31/01/2012 09:55

I can strongly recommend tea tree conditioner and the most amazing comb called "nitty gritty " it's £10 from boots and because it has spiral teeth it takes out both the eggs and lice. We went through the same thing as our DD passed them on to my 13 month old DS and the nitty gritty comb was the only thing that worked.
