Talk to me about high temperatures/ croup

DS2 (3 years) has had a temperature that hasn't gone below 38.5 since Wednesday morning. It peaked at 41.3, at which point GP sent us to hospital and they gave steroids/ nebs/ paracetamol suppositories.

IT's 39.9 again this morning.

I know there's no cure for croup, and he's not sick enough (I don't think) to take back to the doctor, but I'm worried about this prolonged use of paracetamol/ neurofen. The steroids have really helped with the croup itself.

He also hasn't eaten anything at all since Wednesday, apart from a few jelly tots. He's playing now (after calpol) but inbetween doses is very sleepy and lethargic. Not even slightly ineterested in food.

I'm probably being neurotic, my kids are very rarely sick and this seems to be going on a long time (also, I have terrible cabin fever and want to go to the beach but I think I probably shouldn't take him out in the cold?)

DS1 (6) also has the v. high temp but isn't particularly poorly with it.

DD had croup over new year so I had to talk to the out of hours service. They could hear her coughing over the phone and decided they needed to see her. Not only did she have croup, but a raging chest infection. I think your son needs to see a doctor again and have his throat, chest and ears looked at. Another possibility is that he has a urine infection. I hope he feels better soon.

He was admitted last night, IV antibiotics and fluids. Poor baby. Chest X-ray showed infection both sides.

Oh bless. At least he is getting the right treatment. I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

I was about to post that croup should only last 3 or 4 days and he needs to be checked again. Hope it wasn't too scary for you all but well done for getting him sorted.

CrunchyFrog, I hope your little one is feeling better, poor little thing. Our DS (8 months) has been running 39.1/39.3 all day, Calpol brings it down sometimes and then it goes up again. Just waiting for NHS direct to call us back. Sad

I hated it when dd1 used to get croup. But was about to post she never had high temps with it - so very glad you got your LO seen to, Crunchy, though sorry he's got an infection its good its being treated now.

Hope he, and Minibmw's LO, are better v v soon.
