Waking up with an asthma attack (no obvious trigger)

DS2 (5) suffers from asthma which has been fairly well controlled with brown inhaler, montelukast and in the summer antihistamines etc.
However, the last 2 nights he has woken up at about 9pm having an asthma attack. He hasn't got a cold or anything and no obvious triggers that I can see. Last night I was on the verge of taking him to hospital as it took a couple of hours before I was anywhere near happy with his breathing.

Is this likely to be due to him needing an increase in brown inhaler or something else entirely? Will talk to his GP but anyone with advice would be very welcome :)

Is his asthma triggered by dust? I have spent today giving Ds room a deep clean, frozen teddies etc in the hope that will stop our night attacks.

sure its currently under control? using spacers ? taken recent peak flows?

Hmmm, don't know if dust triggers it or not, considering the long list of things that do it is definitely possible. I will do a big clean this weekend :)

He's never had his peak flow taken, won't do it until he is 6 apparently. Yes using spacers.

If he might be allergic to house dust mites, which live in bedding, carpets, etc. be careful about cleaning, as normal hoovers make asthma worse, as they throw fine dust particles into the air. I had this problem and bought a Medivac vacuum cleaner, which made a big difference (it has a very efficient filter). Also get him a new (hypo-allergenic) pillow. I think I remember that something like a third of the weight of an old pillow can be dust.

Mould is another common allergen, so check if anything has got mouldy in his room.

Thanks FF will look at a new pillow, our hoover is an allergy type one. Just done a big clean so hopefully will be better tonight.
