DD has chicken pox....flying on Friday morning. WWYD?

BunnyLebowski · 25/01/2012 13:58

I had a call today from DD (3)'s nursery to come and collect her as she had what appears to be chicken pox.

I've thoroughly examined her... she has 3 faint spots on her neck (2 small, one bigger). She's had a sniffle for a few days but she's in fine form, no temperature and appetite fine. She's never sick and seems to have a pretty hearty immune system .

Here's the clincher. We're meant to be flying to Ireland on Friday to stay with my family .

I have NO experience of chicken pox. If her face remains clear (don't know if that's at all possible) and she's still relatively chipper by Friday then I'm tempted to stick a polo neck and trousers on her and go ahead.

Any advice?

Timothy is right, op.

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 25/01/2012 19:11

No don't take her on the bloody ferry.

OP : what are you going to do? You can't call people hysterical just because they tell you you're doing something. Wrong you know?

Taking a person with cpox into contact with the public is wrong and incerdibly selfish. Fwiw my two had it and it meant I couldn't see my parents on a scheduled wknd (see them rarely) because of potential exposure to my dad who is immuno-compromised. I was gutted but that's life you have to just get over it.

PattiMayor · 25/01/2012 19:49

No, don't take her on the fucking ferry. ginmakesitallok - that is a really stupid post. Was your need for a holiday more important than other people's life? Really? Really?

Because that's what we're talking about here. And I am not generally prone to melodrama.

redpanda13 · 25/01/2012 22:45

My mother nearly died from encephalitis after being exposed to a child with Chicken Pox. No compromised immunity and no underlying health condition. She was in her late 30's and in fine health. She was in a coma for weeks and still suffers from weakness on her left side. Please do not risk it.

ginmakesitallok · 26/01/2012 07:20

My need to get home was greater than the tiny risk of her soming into contact with anyone who was immunocompromised. FFS it's not the plague it's chickenpox!

SoupDragon · 26/01/2012 07:21

For some people it may as well be the plague.

LottieJenkins · 26/01/2012 07:33

Dont you just love it when people ask for advice then throw their toys out of the pram when they don't get the response they expect!!!Hmm Timothy was not over reacting. My son had chickenpox and i didnt realise, we managed to give his grandad shingles because of this and he was very ill!!!!!Sad

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 26/01/2012 07:39

I think it just honestly depends how selfish people are..if they have been told of the risks and then disregard them..if you are ignorant of the risks fair enough but once you have been told it's down to how self-interested you are.

justabigdisco · 26/01/2012 07:44

BUT you can't catch shingles from chicken pox Wink

Grumpla · 26/01/2012 07:46

Timothy is not overreacting and you are embarrassing yourself. Listen to what people are telling you FFS. Angry

Having a child with chicken pox sucks.
So does missing a holiday.
Deal with it.

ginmakesitallok · 26/01/2012 07:46

For some people the common cold might as well be the plague - should we all stay in isolation with the common cold?

Tmesis · 26/01/2012 07:47

Timothy was overreacting to the extent that OP did appear to be taking advice on board, but was waiting to see if it was chickenpox or not, but Timothy kept saying that Op wasn't considering postponing trip and was ignoring advice. If OP had said "bugger you all, I'm taking her anyway" then Timothy wouldn't have been overreacting.

You can't catch shingles from chickenpox (you can catch chickenpox from shingles, though).

sparkle12mar08 · 26/01/2012 07:52

OP, I've been that pregnant woman who's never had chicken pox and I got it at 36+5 weeks pregnant. My son arrived early at 37+6. We'll never know if the pox had anything to do with it. Luckily neither of us had any long term effects but he was born blue and had to be resuscitated. I've never been so frightenend in my life. Please please don't take your holiday if it is chickenpox - it's not about hysteria, it's about cold hard facts. And they are that you could be responsible for your daughter infecting and potentially killing a vulnerable person. Those chances may well be vanishingly small but they do exist. You're presumably an intelligent person, use that intelligence and do the right thing.

hazeyjane · 26/01/2012 09:01

Gin, your comment about the common cold is pointless. There is a reason why the nhs advice is to stay indoors, away from people and not travel.

Also if the op did take dd away with cp, then surely it is going to be a bit of a nightmare having to keep her in the whole stay away? Surely better to postpone the whole thing.

I don't think Timothy was over-reacting, it's just that the op was being a bit laissez-faire.

EdithWeston · 26/01/2012 10:09

I think anyone who posts something which boils down to "I put my needs ahead of the protection of the vulnerable" when talking about an infectious disease for which there is a clear NHS statement on the need for isolation, is going to get a hard time.

OP: how is DD this morning? Has the rash developed?

TimothyClaypoleLover · 26/01/2012 10:58

Tmesis - I didn't keep saying OP wasn't considering postponing trip and ignoring advice. I initially asked if OP was considering postponing. Then OP posted that they were not flying back til 4th so presumed DD would be fine by then so I posted that it appeared she was not postponing and begged her to get more info before flying. My third post was to wonder how things were going and hoping OP was getting more info on chicken pox rather than ignoring - I did not say OP was ignoring everyone.

Bunny - how is your DD today? Have there been any developments? I hope it is not chicken pox as it is an absolute pain. Hopefully she is fine and you can all go off and enjoy your trip away to Ireland.

uv · 27/01/2012 21:41

DS had them at 18mo. I had no idea he was the slightest bit ill, so we flew Amsterdam-SanFrancisco. Miserable flight. No nap and climbing on me for 11 hours. He broke out with spots the next day (after we arrived). The real problem is that it's like a cold- the contagious period is mostly before any spots break out. While they're coming out, it's still contagious, but once you can see a full on case, no one else will catch it.

We had planned a backpacking trip in the mountains, so we kept to schedule. Lots of pictures of him fishing, riding in the backpack, frolicking, all spotty. At least he wasn't miserable, but I really hope we didn't spread it around.

hazeyjane · 27/01/2012 21:53

sorry uv, that isn't true they are still contagious when the spots are out and until the spots have completely scabbed over.

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 27/01/2012 22:59

Yes hazeyjane is right. OP - was it chickenpox?

queenebay · 28/01/2012 11:08

Where did I say chickies was cute?? Its the way I say it you idiot !!! I know how horrible it is-doesnt make it any better because of the way i speak! jeez

hazeyjane · 28/01/2012 13:28

sorry queenebay, you can't deny that 'chickies' is a word that implies cuteness! also you were advocating going on a ferry with a child with chicken pox, so i thought maybe you were underestimating how serious it can be for some people.

hazeyjane · 28/01/2012 13:29

by the way, no need to call me an idiot!

queenebay · 28/01/2012 13:40

Not once did i say it wasnt serious-believe me i know. I said my sister took my nephew on a ferry - and it wasn't a problem staying in a car. She HAD to go on a ferry as they live on an island and had to go to the hospital on the mainland.

narmada · 28/01/2012 13:55

So... the OP hasn't been back. Do we presume from that that she's in Ireland now, then??

hazeyjane · 28/01/2012 14:58

ok, you didn't say that though, so i assumed that you were agreeing with people that were suggesting that going on the ferry in a car would be ok.
