If your child has laboured breathing can I politely suggest you get off Mumsnet and get to a and e or at least the ooh gp

LargeGlassofRed · 22/01/2012 18:01

Even with no temp? Happy in himself, eating and drinking ect?

Yes absolutely. Even with no other symptoms fast, laboured breathing needs to be taken very seriously.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 22/01/2012 18:04

Fast laboured breathing WITH a temp I would say that the temp is a likely cause, paracetamol and review as temp comes down...but without then it is def something which needs medical attention.

Heyyyho · 22/01/2012 18:05

pneumonia is one of the viruses/ infections that doesn't always produce a temp but can be critical for the lungs.

A&E immediately Smile

Ds never gets a temp but has had a whole host of breathing problems. I would never take the risk with breathing

LargeGlassofRed · 22/01/2012 18:19

Ooh doctor calling back

Hope he's ok, my DD has chest problems and even at her worst she seldom has a temp.

itsatiggerday · 22/01/2012 18:28

Good - did they indicate how soon? When did you notice him sounding laboured today? Has he slept a normal amount or more than usual? And how old is he?

Sorry to bombard you, but IME with a 2yo, ooh is a waste of time for this as they have sent us on to A&E every single time, because they don't want to run any risks with a child too young to tell you how much they're struggling and who can deteriorate fast. We now go straight to A&E if we're needing attention. And if they're going to take an hour to call you back and then send to via ooh to A&E, you'll be there at midnight so I'd just go now for his sake. If he's slept more than normal, just get yourself to A&E anyway.

Have been to ooh, dr said chest infection, SAts were 92 so hes given him antibiotics and an inhaler.
He said if breathing got any worse or inhaler not releaving it, to take him straight to a and e.
Thanks for all the advice.

Glad you have got him checked, hope he feels better soon

itsatiggerday · 23/01/2012 10:58

How is he this morning? Hope you had a decent night.

LargeGlassofRed · 23/01/2012 18:19

Still breathing fast but inhaler defiantly helping thanks, did nt get much sleep last night he was struggling more lying down.
He's been fine in himself still, but hates the inhaler!

Glad you're seeing some improvement. Propping the cot / bed up at the head end on blocks / bricks / books can help at night, even a few degrees seems to work a bit.

Sympathies with the inhaler. Mine used to scream and need 3 adults sometimes to hold him for it. Took maybe 3-4 weeks of regular use to get to acquiescence. Now he tries to do it himself and is a positively willing participant, so there is hope. But I hated it when he was so upset. Counted 50 seconds one time that he held his breath mid scream before he breathed the wretched thing in. I failed miserably at trying not to show him that I was upset but I can see that would have been better.

Really hope tonight is better.

Thanks for the tips, hopefully he won't need the inhaler for long.
I've put a pillow under his mattress tonight which is helping.
