Liquid coming from dd's ear

yellowflowers · 19/01/2012 23:15

My 1yo dd seems to have liquid coming from her ear. it was all crusty today and I thought it must be snot she'd wiped over it, or her breakfast, but I cleaned it all up during her bath and I realise now it's coming from her ear as her ear is all wet. It's colourless and odourless but is sticky. I'll take her to doc am but any ideas? No temp and fine in herself.

Definitely an infection. Get her to gp.

Do you think I should call out if hours doc or morning would suffice?

Take her temperature and perhaps call the doc for advice over the phone. Definitely go to GP in the morning though as ear infections can damage hearing if not treated.

Has she bumped her head at all today?

Normally with an ear infection, the liquid is smelly and a mustardy orange colour IME (DD1 suffered from glue ear). A clear liquid would be something I'd check with OOh Doctors tbh as it can (rarely) be a sign of an internal head injury.

Could well have a perforated ear drum. (would definitely be in my ds) In which case they may want to swab it and give antibiotics. Go to the GP.

Same advice as DeWe

Tmesis · 20/01/2012 09:48

Quite likely that she's had an ear infection and the eardrum has now burst (letting out all the gunk). Has she been unusually grumpy/irritable the last few days? Once the eardrum goes they generally feel much better so are generally fine in themselves at that point.

Depending on the doctor they may or may not give you antibiotics (quite likely to, though) and may or may not want you to come back in a couple of weeks so that they can see if the eardrum is healing up nicely.

My elder two used to have this happen any time they got an ear infection but have grown out of it now with no long-term ill effects.

Thanks all. We went this am by which time gunk was yellower. Doc proclaimed it very gunky and has given us antibiotics. She still has no temp but is ultra clingy. She's eating but rejecting bottle though accepting breastmilk so hopefully antibiotics will kick in asap and it will start to clear up.
