DS won't eat anything!

DS (21 months) has been ill since Sunday... I went to the doctors on Tuesday and she prescribed sudafed. He's been so sleepy spends nearly all day asleep on me, doesn't want to play, watch television. I can 'force' him to drink but he's nor eating.

Yesterday one petit filous and half a small cake (it was the only thing I could get him to eat). Today so far nothing.

Shall I take him back to the doctors? I'm worried.

If he's feeling poorly and the meds are making him sleepy, he probably just isn't hungry. Make sure you are getting fluids down him though.
As long it isn't a sickness bug, I'd just try and tempt him with his favourites (whether 'healthy' or not). Has he got a sore throat and finding it difficult to swallow? My DCs often like ice cream or lollies (a good way to get fluids down too) as they slip down easily and numb a sore throat.

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 19/01/2012 12:23

Thank you for replying... I've offered all his favourites... I'd quite happily let him eat a Mars bar right now if he'd eat it.

He is drinking when prompted so I am getting lots of sips often and he is giving wet nappies although they are a bit smelly so he may be a little dehydrated.

It just seems to be going on for so long... This essentially started on Saturday. I think back to the doctors tomorrow. Sad

Poor thing - I hope he feels better soon. What is it - the cold/flu type thing? Has he a temp? They do seem to be hanging about a bit this year Sad
Las time my DD was ill she ended up eating crisps and ice cream - nothing else would do!

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 19/01/2012 12:40

It started with vomiting (which lasted until Tuesday) and now it appears to be 'just a cold'... His eyes and nose literally stream and he's finding it all distressing.
The doc said his ears were a little red (she didn't look at his throat).

I feel helpless, he spends his day alternating between sitting on me watching a bit of Thomas or asleep on me. :(

I've tried ice cream, yoghurt, chocolate buttons, cereal, toast, cake, banana...nothing! Sad

His temp is slightly elevated but not high... He's sudafed-ed and capol-ed up. Sad

Poor thing. Just keep getting him to drink little and often. Try diluted juice so you can get a bit of sugar into him. Sudafed does make adults drowsy so it might be that. However for peace of mind ( so you can not worry over the weekend ) then it might be an idea to get him checked again on Friday. Sounds a bit fluish vomiting now a heavy cold.

notso · 19/01/2012 12:48

Aw. Poor him and poor you. It is a worry when they won't eat. I would keep offering him small meals or snacks, but try not to stress if he doesn't take much. Fluids are the main thing. Think about yourself if you are ill, sometimes food is the last thing you fancy.

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 19/01/2012 12:48

Yes I think if I don't get him seen tomorrow I will spend the whole weekend worrying. Thank you for replying Rosa. The sudafed does say 'non-drowsy' but I guess when I'm ill all I want to do is sleep.

Its pretty normal to not want to eat when you are sick so leave it and just offer water so he doesnt become dehydrated. When his body has cleared out the disease then his appetite will pick up. And temperature (during the day when you dont need sleep) is actually good and should be left.
I went to a lecture by a doctor about this yesterday Smile

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 19/01/2012 15:10

I'm waiting for my GP to call. I'm in need of reassurance. His fever crept up because I stopped giving him neurogenic/callow because I was giving sudafed. But NHS direct have just told me that I can give him both and already it's started to come down.

Hi, My dd (27mth) has just had this. she was scik at the weekend and then just wouldn't eat, didn't drink for a while but then did drink and only ate tiny bits like your ds. She was sick again on the nonday and took her to docs on tues as just not picking up, was told it was viral gastroenteritis (sp) and would take 7-10 days to get over. True enough its taken a good 8 days to get her appetitie back. Still not great by tea time but def eating breaky and lunch now! BTU my mum (who looks after dd mon and fri) has now got it and she says she just isn't wanting food. Drinks are ok but no food really.
Hope he perks up soon, Take care.

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 19/01/2012 15:24

Gosh... Without being mean to your poor DD, it's good to know we are not the only ones in this situation. I'm glad she's picking up.

I'm exhausted, so you must be too! Sad

Okay, Dr asked us to bring him... He listened to his chest (that's it) but he said it's clear and he's not breathing quickly or heavily.
He said to keep him dosed up on calpol and nurofen and if we arc concerned to bring him back tomorrow to see our usual Dr.
My poor little man... I hate it when he's poorly! Sad

How is your DS today?

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 20/01/2012 14:16

Still not eating... I went to the doctors this morning and he said there was nothing more I could do but to continue offering. :(

OP posts:
notso · 20/01/2012 14:39

Oh . I really hope he starts to perk up soon.
Just try and remember you are doing the best you can for him and at his age especially, if they want food they will soon let you know.
I know you feel helpless but in no time he'll be eating you out of house and home I'm sure.

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 20/01/2012 15:00

Thank you.
