High fever and rapid heart beat???

Dd2 (5) has been poorly sinse early this morning, probably just a virus (as i have been poorly too), her temp is very high (almost 40) but she often has a high temp when poorly, she's led on the sofa and keeps falling asleep. When i lie next to her i can see her heart beeting very fast and the veins in her neck pulsating fast. Is this normal? is it just her body coping with the fever? or should i be worried?

Hi Marne,

What are her other symptoms? How is her breathing in particular? Is she drowsy all the time or alert when awake? Is she drinking enough? It is hard to tell on just what you have posted. On the other hand, in my view, when it comes to children, if you are concerned enough to ask, you should get her checked by a doctor.

Marne I have been told a few times in the past by different health care professionals that children with a high temp will often have a more rapid heart beat/pulse.

There are lots of viruses around at the moment and children in particular can spike a relatively high temp with these.

However, as larry says it would depend on any other symptoms and how responsive she is as to whether or not I would be getting it checked out. The good thing with children is that as quick as they can go downhill they can very quickly recover). But I would definitely be keeping a close eye on the situation and if things deteriorated in any way I think it would be better then to get a proper professional opinion.

Good luck :)

dd had these symptoms yesterday and complained of "poking" pains in her chest and back. Nearly took her to A & E last night when she was sick and said it hurt to look at bright light, but within about half an hour her temp had come down and she seemed quite a bit better, and she's fine today. These things do seem to come and go amazingly quickly. Even so you could maybe call NHS Direct and see what they say.

I'm not 100% sure what her other symptoms are (where it hurts), she has Autism and goes into 'shut down mode' when she's poorly so i just have to guess Sad, she hasn't moved off the sofa all day, keeps falling asleep (very unlike her), she's making groaning noises (like men do when they are ill, sorry its hard to explain), her breathing is slightly laboured and she's a bit shakey. She often gets like this when ill but doesn't get ill often, we often end up at the gp's or a&e but i dont want to end up there tonight. Just wish i could get calpol into her but i can't do it on my own (takes 3 people to get it into her).

She's now sat up a bit and sucking an ice lolly, temp gone down a tiny bit to 38.00 Grin

Ah poor thing, sounds miserable. Hope she's over the worst of it now.
