Gaviscon for reflux

Foes anyone have experience of treating reflux with gaviscon in a baby?

Our daughter is 13 weeks and has just been prescribed it. Is it supposed to work instantly or build up? Our doctor usefully said use it as necessary, but the instructions say use at every feed..

Is she BF or bottle fed? I would try an anti-reflux formula before gaviscon. Gaviscon can constipate. We used Enfamil AR on order from Boots & it worked wonderfully.

Your doc doesn't sound particularly helpful. I think you need to use Gaviscon consistently for it to work, but you should ask if in doubt.

Ds2 was on Sma staydown for reflux it was fab worked straightaway but can take a while. We got it on prescription from
Hv, we couldn't use gaviscon too as it would just make a lump of milk. Tried ranitidine too but the Sma was great.

'As necessary' works for us.

It took a weekend and most of a box to work out how to get it into DS - mixed with a little milk/water & slurped off a spoon, he wouldn't take a bottle.

Then he had one or both sachets after each, or every other feed. That flexibility is what is brilliant for us.

He went from being a screaming angry boy to a total pleasure to be around in just a few days. It was magic!

Try 1 sachet after each feed, keep an eye on her poo, adjust dosage if it seems too much/not enough.

Good luck!

She's breast fed.

The HVs have been telling me about ranitidine but it's taken me three doctors and four appointments to get this far.

I managed to get some into her this morning and it did seen to make a difference, which I wasn't expecting at all! She stopped arching her back almost straight away and haddock fallen asleep in her swing seat.

Think I'll keep on with it and see how her poo goes

Thanks all :)

I used gaviscon with DD1, gave it to her in a small quantity of ebm mid piont in a feed ( they say give it at the end but 1) how do you know they are just about to finish and 2) when DD was finished she wasn't interested in a bottle.

It didn't stop the vomiting but it did calm the pain (I think) we were also advised to keep her upright in a bouncy chair/car seat etc after a feed (this was before folk got funny about sitting babies in car seats, she's 5 now)

I have no experience of ranitadine in babies but it worked on my horrendous heartburn in subsequent pgs

I think there are some reflux support threads which may be able to offer more advice

In case you are still checking this, look for the refllux threads in the feeding section. There are a lot of fraught parents on there who will share your pain and experiences. It gets better, I promise.

My DD was on Gaviscon powder from a very early age (she was premature). Never had any problem with it and we stopped having it when she was fully weaned.

She's now on Domperidone as she can sometimes aspirate her food. No problems at all with it and no side effects. Can be given on a spoon.
