teething - canines - how long and how disruptive?

I've trawled the back catalogue of threads on this and can see that canines have caused misery for some LOs. Md DD is nearly 20 months and lateish with all teeth so far, and also they seem to take ages to come through (think we finished molars in Nov). In Dec we started a concerted effort to improve her sleep and over three weeks, had steady and encouraging progress, culminating in her best night ever on New Year's Eve. I rejoiced. From the very next night she became as miserable as she ever has been and after 2 weeks we are back to co-sleeping and lots of bf at , not to mention knackered, dispirted etc. I can see a white lump in her gums where each canine will be - and I am so hoping that this is the explanation for the huge backwards leap in sleep. If it's going to take a while and be really hideous for her then I will not attempt sleep improvements again till the worst is over. Am giving her calpol at bedtime, but slightly baffled because Penelope Leach, who is my favourite childcare author, says canines are much easier than molars. However one person on my post-natal group reports utter misery with them.
