Dd (7.5) seems to have developed a phobia about getting water in her ears.

I have no clue what started this. She has always loved swimming. In July she spent 2 week on holiday doing handstands in the pool/on the waterslides. She then broke her wrist, so spent rest of summer out of the water.

Since she went back to school in September, she has moaned about swimming lessons and putting her head in the water. She had a bit of a cold. so I never thought anything much initially - just blocked tubes iyswim.

It seems to have got generally worse - to the point that when I suggested going swimming, she really doesn't want to go. This morning I sad she should have a shower or bath. There were tears. She went in the bath, but when I tried to wet her hair to wash it she screamed! I was talking calmly to her, saying it is only a bit of water and I would never hurt her, but she was clearly terrified. (She does go in the shower regularly by the way but it seems to have reached an extreme point)

I asked her to tell me what she is worried about, but she just cries. I don't know if something has happened at school swimming lessons or whatever. She does not complain about her ears the rest of the time - so I don't think it is a medical thing. When I suggested going to the doctor, she says - no, I will get over it.

Any ideas?

Does she have waxy ears? As a kid I would get persistent water in my ears when swimming if they were too waxy. Worth a nurse check at the GP. Otherwise take a look at some of the ear plugs you can use. We got some putty buddies from www.swimstop.co.uk when DD had grommets and they were pretty easy to use and effective.
