DD 10 problems with heavy periods

Back in October the day I had been quietly dreading arrived and DD started her period aged 10yrs 4months. She's always been a little ahead of the game in the development stakes so I wasn't overly surprised but she was really upset and didn't want to talk about it. I'm a nurse so have never been prudish about these matters and have encouraged her to talk to me, I also know they've been over the subject at school several times, I just think she hates the idea of it all.
Her first period only lasted a few days but seemed surprisingly heavy from the evidence I saw, I know when I first started it was more spotting but hers came with a gush! Then there was nothing until the week before Xmas when it started again, this time it was less of a shock & we were better prepared. This second period lasted 8 days which seemed like a long time but then she only had a gap of just over a week before starting again :(
She's still really heavy today after around 2 weeks of bleeding and I'm getting quite worried, she doesn't really want to talk about it still and freaked when I suggested we might see GP!
I don't have much experience of gynae problems so not really sure how out of the ordinary this is or what can be done about it. Any thoughts?

I think a GP visit is in order after two weeks of heavy bleeding. She may be getting anaemic, quite apart from it not being normal for a period to last that long (and come so soon after another one). Of course things can take a while to settle down just after periods have started, but that just doesn't sound right, and must be very distressing for her.

Do you have a nice GP? Can you ask for a female one, if that would help her?

Thanks exexpat, it doesn't sound right does it. I've been telling mysef it will sort itself out and settle down but I guess it's gone on long enough now.
Our GP is really nice and specialises in womens health so he would be great but I'm not sure DD would understand this so I might be better taking her to one of the female Drs. Our surgery tend to be pretty flexible (thankfully) so I'm sure they'll be able to help.
I feel so sad for her it's not nice at any age but she's so young to have to be going through this!
