Tonsilitus in my 5 yr old DS - how can I make him more comfortable?

Hiya - I'm hoping a fellow parent can help advise how I can help my poorly son.
He was diagnosed yesterday with severe tonislitus and ear infection in both ears. He's also just got over chest infection which left him wheezy so has been using ventolin and brown inhaler to help open airways.
He's on antibiotics and giving him pain relief but he really struggles to breathe when he sleeps, like he's panting for breath - is this normal?
How can I help him sleep better as he's not resting well because of this srtuggle to breathe?
Getting so paranoid that its not normal and in two minds to just take him back to docs.

Thanks for any help - would really appreciate any calming words of wisdom!

Tonsillitis is awful! Keep him propped up with lots of pillows, ice pops that he can suck on for fluid, as just swallowing anything is so sore.

Without wanting to alarm you if his breathing is rapid and you feel uneasy about it then take him back to the docs. My DS2 ended up in hospital with tonsillitis as they were so enlarged they were blocking his airway and he needed iv antibiotics and oxygen. Don't hesitate to return to your gp.

I hope he is on the men's soon, poor thing.

bugsonbuns · 10/01/2012 11:09

Hmm....I think you should go back to the Dr - or phone NHS Direct. is he worse that yesterday when the Dr saw him, or just the same? I'm no medic but if he's struggling to breathe I think it'd be better to get it checked out again especially if its worse or no better. I guess it may just get better as the antibiotics kick in - but maybe best just to check back with them? Poor love, sounds awful!

Apart from that....maybe similar thing as for croup? Steamy air - in a bathroom with the taps running. Get a warm air humidifier to run overnight in his room to keep it steamy? Elevating head of the bed, sitting more upright with pillows to help drainage. Lots of fluids, warm water and honey/lemon.

Hope he feels better soon.

Hammy01 · 10/01/2012 11:19

thanks everyone am just waiting for doc to phone back - rather be safe than sorry tbh. he dosent want to drink anything, take any medicine have him on my lap to sit him more upright but not improved him much.
Feel like Im over reacting (recently lost my MIL to cancer so I know Im hyper sensitive to any cough or temperature) and I am normally level headed but two nights of watching him getting worse and worse is taking its toll on my sanity!
Whenever I go to the doctors (which has been every week for the last 4 weeks with DS for chest infection, wheezines and now this) I see different one everytime and feel like a nuerotic mum.

Apologies for spelling typing one handed!

Slightlycrumpled - did ur DS2 have really swollen neck and face too? DS has but thought that was due to lymph glands trying to fight infection?

OP posts:
LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 10/01/2012 11:26

Ice cream and ice lollies? it helps them have a bit of liquid in them.

Tell the doc about the wheezing and the swollen face, and if it gets worse call an ambulance.

Hammy01 · 10/01/2012 11:32

LeMousquetaireAnonyme - he doesnt want anything whatever I offer, his temperature has dropped so thats one good thing.
still waiting for doc to call....if Ive not had a call by 12 Im going to call NHS direct

Hammy01 · 10/01/2012 14:02

doc called back and Ive got to take him back down to surgery at 330.
DS temperature gone back up to 39 and he's been sick...feel so helpless.
thank you ladies for keeping me 'sane' in my hours of need Thanks

Glad you got an appt will be sending lots of fighty bug thoughts your DS's way. And don't feel like you're being the over-anxious mother either - I would definitely be going to the Dr too.

Hammy01 · 10/01/2012 14:09

Thanks bugsonbuns Thanks

How is he Hammy? Hope doc put your mind at rest/ sorted him out.
DS2 had very swollen glands and was tested for glandular fever in hospital as he was so poorly.
I hope he is a little better today.

bugsonbuns · 11/01/2012 09:29

Just wondering how your DS is too? Hope he's feeling a bit better.

Hammy01 · 13/01/2012 13:02

Hi ladies my apologies for not getting back on sooner. Went direct to a&e Tuesday afternoon where he was given I've antibiotic, cal pol and anti sickness. He also had an enlarged spleen so docs gave him a ct scan. S was admitted to hospital due to bleeding tonsils etc. then we were given scan results - our ds has a high chance due to clusters in neck and chest indicative of a lymphaoma. Were transferrd to royal marsden Wednesday and he's having bone marrow and biopsy done this afternoon.
We are still reeling from shock.
Won't get diagnosis until next week posibly later so living at the hospital while lovely family and friends support us thru this nightmare.
Thank you for giving me confidence to take him backThanks

I am so sorry to hear this. What a shock for you all.

He's in excellent hands and it's good to hear you have such support.

bugsonbuns · 13/01/2012 20:45

Oh no - what a shock. Oh I'm so sorry for you and your DS. Fingers, arms and toes crossed for the diagnosis to be good news next week. Good that he's in the best place and they'll hopefully be able to make himfeel more comfy (bleeding tonsils? Bless him, what a poor little soldier). Big, big hugs to you and your DS.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 14/01/2012 07:18

Glad you got a proper diagnosis. What a shock though. I came onto this thread as my DD has tonsiltis at the moment.
Positive thoughts for your son and you take care too.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 14/01/2012 07:23

So sorry, glad you took him back. Take care.

CURIOUSPARENT · 14/01/2012 07:36

Hammy so sorry to have read this.

Sending love and best wishes to you and DS

maydaychild · 14/01/2012 08:01

What a terrifying turn of events. Be strong. Youve got a strong network of support here in MN x

GRW · 14/01/2012 08:59

I am so sorry to read this. You are in a renowned hospital for cancer patients, so I'm sure you will get excellent care and support. I hope that treatment will make your son feel better quickly x

Hammy01 · 15/01/2012 19:49

Thank you everyone for support. ThanksDs tonsils are no longer pusy or bleeding but very swollen. However the iv antibiotics have helped immensely and he is breathing a lot better.
I cannot praise royal mars den enough, the support the nurses and doctors and especially the other parents with their poorly babies going thru treatment...amazing.
Makes you feel very small seeing what the poorly children go thru on a daily basis, makes me feel very humble.
We're keeping everything crossed that ds has got a nasty virus but if it is more than I know we'll get thru it together.

OP posts:
slightlycrumpled · 16/01/2012 11:49

Hammy, so sorry to see that you've all had such a terrible week.
DS2 was honestly so poorly (I didn't want to worry you too much on my earlier post) that he was tested for all sorts. Fingers, toes, everything crossed for you that it is just very, very nasty tonsillitis & virus.

It sounds like he is being very well looked after & as a seasoned hospital visitor with my ds please make sure you look after yourself too. Don't forget to eat a little whenever you can. Children's wards are utterly draining.

Thinking of you all. X
