What food best for recovering from bug?

DS is 22 mo and just getting over his first sicky bug. No vomit now just very soupy nappies and wind. What's best to feed him to firm things up a bit? He doesn't have much of an appetite at the mo so want to maximize the benefit of what doss go in! Thanks...

Nothing with milk in until his stomach has settled. Bananas are excellent, loads of vitamins and quite binding.

Bland is best. Bananas may increase wind but won't be harmful at all. Toast is often a good starting point. Milk in moderation. Well done for getting to 22 months without a bug though :)

I have eard the suggestion of BRAT - bananas rice apples and toast- lots all bland and seem to be easy on the stomach.

We also used to do things like rich tea biscuits and flat lemonade - wait sorry that was while they were still sick - bland but with a bit of sugar to give them some energy.

The pectin in apples is supposed to help bind up the contents of your gut and help slow it down after an upset stomach. toast is easier to digest than plain bread and rice is bland and harmless - not sure why the bananas though - probably as they are good for energy.

I would just go with bland and boring. Nothing that makes the inflamed irritated bowel work harder - eg fruit, vedge, wheat etc. Small frequent portions.

Rice cakes. Bread sticks. Rich tea bics and rusks.

Plain toast.

Oh cool thanks, I am along the right lines then... Bit confusing about fruit or no fruit, wheat or no wheat though... I get that bananas are binding though, and he has had a few bites of one today, as well as some fish fingers and toast, so hopefully the soupy bottom will start to disappear! Thanks all... Smile

The NICE guideline for D&V is not to give fizzy drinks or pure fruit juices. Carbonated drink as it causes increased wind, and apple, orange,etc juices presumabably because the acidity of the fruits also irritate an already irritated bowel.

you need bland bulking easy to digest foods, & no roughage, such as fruit, veg etc & I'd avoid wheat & diary for a little while too

potato, white rice, rice cakes, porridge is good, but made with water not milk - oats are good for the digestive tract -

honey, especially Manuka honey is good too, if you can get it, Viridian Childrens Flora Powders are great & rebalance the gut flora - I mix a dose up with a tea spoon of honey & find that goes down easily & helps my own (older) DD who has IBS, so suffers with diarreah often

I'd definitely avoid apples & apple juice too though - apparently the fruit sugar in that is the most laxative type

Top stuff Rockin thanks, interesting about apples- I have a digestive disorder and have always struggled with apples! I'll look up the floral powders, they sound like they are right up our street.
