Toddler diarrhoea -any advice please?

Our 14mo ds has had toddler diarrhoea (we think) on and off (mainly on) for 3 months. We are trying a food diary and eliminating high fibre but nothing is working yet. Any tips? How long can it take to clear up? Where can we get help, advice etc? I'm having to miss loads of work as he gets sent home from nursery and then have to have 48 hours off.

This latest one, he hasn't stopped crapping since new year's eve...

thanks in advance

Leave out dairy foods for a while, it's a common intolerance which often goes away with age regardless of the diet. As long as weight is still increasing then you needn't worry too much yet. You're doing the right things but remember that the effects of cutting out a specific food won't change things for a few days as the body needs to get rid of any excess intolerance's. It may sadly be something you have to put up with for quite a while yet. Good luck!

With 22mo DD we found that limiting dried fruits, wheat cereal and peas cleared up the worst of it. She has a banana a day to try and keep things a bit more solid.

If she has a day where she has all of the things we've cut out, or she doesn't have a banana, you can expect a poo explosion within a couple of hours :(

Reducing dairy didn't help in her case. this site has some good information on, and actually seems to advocate giving slightly more dairy as the fat content helps

I also found this leaflet really useful (it opens a PDF rather than a website)

into Google if the link doesn't work!

Thanks for that, the link is really useful. He seems to be settling down - only 2 poos so far today and 3 yesterday (after more than 10 a day before, not solid but not watery any more either). Wondering if it was just an overdose of dried fruit over Christmas? But it just took so long to settle down and he'd had it before anyway.

The gp was really good, have sent off more samples to rule out infection again and also referring us to a paediatrician. She also said not to worry about food excluding at the moment as we would tie ourselves in knots about it (which I had!).

Childminder also good, happy to have him as long as not infectious which is a weight off our minds!

The wierd thing about dairy is that when we first started weaning him, we didn't give him any dairy as we are mostly vegan. He started having it in August (as I was worried about him getting enough fat etc but he hasn't had loads) but the pooing started in October (I think).

We'll stick with the food diary and see how it goes, maybe trying cutting out dairy / wheat etc if more flare ups.

Thanks for support, from other threads it sounds like it can be a lot worse.
