Help please urgent - given 2yo overdose of Ibuprofen

Rebelcountycailin · 07/01/2012 20:49

Please, please help - thinking I was holding the bottle of Paracetamol, I gave my 2.2yo a double dose of Ibuprofen by accident. He is teething very badly at the moment (back molars).

I am beside myself with worry. Have called NHS Direct but was told it could be up to 4 hours before I get a call back.

Do I need to take him to A&E? He is fine and running around at the moment. I am very frightened.

Thank you.

How much has he had in last 24 hours? Assume by overdose you mean 5ml not 2,5ml or 10 ml instead 5ml.
Also how heavy is ds (they dose on weight elsewhere)

bonzo77 · 07/01/2012 20:58

not sure, so bumping for you. Ibuprofen is processed by the kidneys rather than the liver. It is much safer in overdose than calpol (paracetamol). I would try to get him to drink as much water as possible to dilute it, but not to worry too much, especially as you have only done it once. It can be harsh on the tummy, so I would also make sure he has food in his tummy, so give him something stodgy like cereal or toast. The doses on the packets are well within safe margins, I regularly take one off double doses of Ibuprofen for bad headaches.

Gingerbics · 07/01/2012 20:59

I'm sure it'll be fine, often the doses on bottles are smaller than given in hospital as there they work out a specific dose based on a child's weight. If it's a one off even less of a worry.
If nhs direct going to take 4hrs to call back you could call your out of hours gp for advice if you want confirmation from a dr. I'm sure loads of us give bigger and smaller doses without knowing it when we're sleep deprived.
Take care and hope you get a decent night sleep x

Rebelcountycailin · 07/01/2012 21:02

I gave him two 5 ml doses together. Earlier today he had a 5 ml dose of paracetamol at around 2pm.

He is quite a big 2.2yo. I last had him weighed towards the end of November and he was weighing well over 2 stone then. I don't know his exact weight today - don't have scales.

He is busy eating brioche rolls and dry cheerios and he's had some water.

If your worried phone your OOH they should be able to give advice over the phone.

Gigondas · 07/01/2012 21:05

You can give paracetamol with nurofen.
Sounds like he has had double the dose so I would take him to a and e to be sure as they can give him something to
Mop it up.

DeWe · 07/01/2012 21:05

With ibroprofin it's almost certainly okay. But ring your OOH and check. If it wa calpol it's more worrying.

Gigondas · 07/01/2012 21:06

Agree that nurofen prob less serious than calpol but would want call/ visit to confirm

Rebelcountycailin · 07/01/2012 21:08

Called OOH - waiting for call back - am marked as urgent. Thank you for your help.

Hopefully all will be fine and hope
You hear soon.

Rebelcountycailin · 07/01/2012 21:19

Thank you for all your help. OOH has reassured me he has definitely not had an overdose. In the meantime I think I need something for my nerves. Thank you again.

That is a relief (and also your instinct that he seemed fine). Have a Wine

bonzo77 · 07/01/2012 21:20

Wine then OP! glad you are reassured.

Rebelcountycailin · 07/01/2012 21:37

Wish I could have wine but will make do with tea as BFing DS2!! Thank you all again for your help. I've never been in such a panic - well, not for quite some time anyway! Wink

OP - can I just say it is so nice to see someone posting with a child poisoning worry AFTER ringing NHS direct. That's how it should be but what usually happens is numpty parent using mumsnet for advice instead of the proper medical sources. Mumsnet is for handholding not recommendations. You did the right thing Grin Hope you all get a good night now.

paddyclamp · 07/01/2012 22:30

I actually gave DS too much ibuprofen for his age once...what is reassuring is that once he had a febrile convulsion due to a high temp and was pumped full of a massive dose of ibuprofen to bring his temp down, much bigger dose than that stated on the bottle..and all is well!
