What could be causing dd's headaches?

DD (10.10) comes home from school many days complaining of a headache. Any ideas what could be causing it?

Wondering if I need to take her to see a doctor.

And if it is relevant, she did not seem to have a problem with headaches over the Christmas break.

Thanks.

What's the overhead lighting like in school?

Is she doing lots of ict work?

Bignorkz · 04/01/2012 22:39

Straining eyes to see blackboard maybe?
Is she drinking plenty of fluids?

Yama · 04/01/2012 22:42

I was going to suggest eye strain or lack of water.

Hmm - all of you have said the same as me.

I told her to try to drink a bit of water all throughout the school day, but she only drank when in the nurses's bay at school. Hmm

I've wondered if she needs her eyes checked (know she likes the idea of wearing glasses, so can't really get a clear answer from her on that).

The school nurse told her it might be puberty related. Anyone ever heard of that causing headaches?

Could be puberty related, girls can suffer from headaches around that time. When did she last have an eye test?

For several years I used to get migraines with the start of my period. Unfortunately I am very regular and one of my (female) teachers complained that I was missing "the double lesson on Monday afternoons once every four weeks". We really had to spell it out to her.

I also find that smartboards give me really bad headaches. I have no idea why - normal blackboards I'm fine with, and normal whiteboards, but smartboards ("interactive whiteboards" or whatever else they are known by) make mine worse.

For a few years (starting with the menstrual migraines) I wore glasses - my vision was fine but apparently the glasses did something like bending the light. I didn't really understand how they worked, but they did. Previously a few hours on a computer would give me a headache, but with glasses I was fine. It's stopped happening now, but was really bad at one point. It could be that her vision seems fine but this is happening to your DD?

She had a very basic eye exam at her annual physical exam last March, but nothing since then.

I was thinking only today that I need to make an appointment for her next appointment sometime soon.

Could it be stress? I started getting stress migraine type headaches round about that age. After a stressful day at school I would often come out with one having had it coming on all afternoon but only really hitting in as I came out.

supermama212 · 06/01/2012 15:29

get her eyes tested??? As another poster suggests could she be stressed?

Earlybird · 06/01/2012 16:03

Thanks for responses.

I don't think she is stressed, though headaches were not a problem over Christmas break and only are occurring now she's back at school.

Yesterday was better though - no complaints when I collected her. However, she hadn't managed to drink much water during the day (in spite of being told to make a real effort), so don't know if that might help the situation.

My dd 10 was feeling sick and headachy around ten mins before lunchtime and then couldnt eta her lunch, she also said she felt weak.
She has felt better since i started to give her some bread sticks instead of the school rule fruit for her mid morn snack.I think her blood sugar was dropping cos she didnt alway finish her fruit cos isnt that keen tbh.

LucyFarinelli · 07/01/2012 22:04

I had this at school from 8-16 yo. It was dehydration. It only went away at 6th form because we were allowed to drink water in class. Bottle of water on the desk to drink throughout lessons - et voila! No more headaches.
