Chicken Pox

My DS 14 year old has come out with Chicken Pox 3 days ago. Very severe of course because of his age. The itching kept him and me up all night. Can I use the oats on him in the bath and how long after the blisters have dried does he have to wait before going back to shool - he is very self concious and his face is covered in spots.

You have to keep them isolated until they've stopped getting new spots and all spots have crusted over.

Oats or bicarb in the bath is a good idea.

Ds got chickenpox at the start of november - he still has some marks - not scars just faded spots.

However, I'd probably keep your ds off for a wee while yet - chickenpox ime really knocks the immune system - give him time to recover. Also, ds and dd both had loads of spots (4y and 14m) and A LOT faded really quickly after day 6, its just some on the torso that are lingering.

you can give anti-histamines to help with itching. Acqueous calamine cream can help as well as oats in the bath (or bicarbonate of soda in the bath). They normally crust over within 5-7 days of the spots appearing and once they have all crusted he will no longer be infectious.
