Trimethoprim - how did your DC react to it?

Just a quick one, my DS (2months old) has been on Trimethoprim since birth for a dilated kidney. He has always been a very sleepy baby, and quite tricky to feed. Bad parents that we are we forgot to give him his daily dose as couple of days ago and the next day he was like a different baby. He was alert, drained his bottles and asked for more etc. Back on the Trimethoprim he's back to his usual sleepy self. We are going to see his consultant but we can't get hold of them till tomorrow so was just wondering what others experiences of this drug are.

Hi. I've no experience with trimethoprim and children, but I took it for the first time about a year ago for a urine infection. I didn't have a classic allergic reaction as such, but within 24hrs I felt nauseous, no appetite and, worst of all, completely spaced out. I stopped taking it and will not take it again! Interestingly, my mother had exactly the same reaction to it about 6 months ago.

Probably not helpful but dd on it for repeat utis but not noticed any difference on or off

My dd was on trimethoprim for recurrent Uti's and multi-cystic dysplastic kidney disease. She wasn't drowsy or affected in any other way that we could see but children as adults can react to drugs in different ways. I hope you get to the bottom of this.

My ds1 was on trimethoprim for pelvic renal dilation from birth till a scan at 6 weeks - I really can't remember how he was on it but a do remember no sleep till 6 weeks...
Is your ds on it for a finite time or indefinitely? wondering if you have concerns if you can get consultant app and speed up review, once we had good 6 week ultrasound he came off meds...

Ds was on it for 4 months. No change in behaviour, he was 20m.

However, there was a thread on here a while ago - a poster thought it made her child resist sleep so conceivable that it could work the other way.

Thanks for the replies everyone, it's good to hear of others experiences with this drug (both good and bad). Verybusyspider he's on it indefinitely at the moment, we are waiting on a mag 3 scan later this month to see what needs to happen next, trying to get hold of his consultant but it's bloody difficult! Managed to get as far as the secretary who has passed the message on, have phoned several times now think she's starting to get a bit pissed off but I want this sorted.
