Urine infection in DD aged 3

My DD has had a urine infection since last Tuesday. She has already had 10 days worth of Trimethoprim and has just started another bottle for 10 days. Needless to say she is in a lot of pain after going for a wee. I took her back to A&E on Christmas Eve because she was red raw down below, and he suggested nappy rash cream which has helped. I've giving her Calpol. Has anyone any ideas about how else to ease the pain? She's in agony, writhing and screaming for a good half hour after each wee. It's heartbreaking. Also, shouldn't she be getting better by now? Her wee isn't as smelly as it was but is still extremely cloudy.

Go to the out of ours GP tomorrow or A&E tomorrow am and get a urine sample tested and new antibiotics - it may be resisant to the trimethoprim, and at age 3 can potentially be serious if not treated. My DD had recurrent infections for around 2 years, and on a couple of ocassions the trimethoprim didn't work and she had to have diferent antibiotics. Cloudy wee is definitely a sign it's not worked.

And pouring a jug of water over her whilst she's weeing will help with the pain.

I think I will take her back. I've already been to the GP twice, plus the A&E, and I don't want to become a nuisance, but at the same time I can't just sit back while she's in such pain and do nothing. I'm also getting worried, having read previous discussions on the same topic, that she might end up with a kidney infection. I did prod her kidneys this morning to see if I got a reaction and she said it didn't hurt. Also she's had no temperature throughout. She's lost a couple of pounds too, because although she's not 'proper poorly' in between attacks of pain, she's definitely not herself and not eating much.

hours not ours of course

They should be sending off samples to be tested and changing the antibiotic after 10 days, would def take her back

pancake123 · 01/01/2012 22:03

You're right, I will take her back. Thanks for getting back to me, sometimes you need someone else to tell you what you're already thinking!

I used loads of nappy cream, cranberry juice, detol in some bathwater and calpol plus making sure she was drinking loads to try ad dilute it.

It's horrible hope she feels better soon.

Btw my dd didn't have a temp all the time either si gp said she had to be tested before getting antibiotics Hmm

pancake123 · 01/01/2012 22:11

She's had her wee dipped twice at the surgery and the first time the GP said she had an unusually high level of nitrates in it. The second time the nitrates level was down but the sample was still cloudy. The GP said I should wait a week after finishing the second bottle of anitbiotics and then take in a sample to send off to hospital so they could check all was clear. But that was when both me and the GP were confident the ABs would clear it, but now I'm not so convinced it is doing, not after 11 days of 10mls a day and still in pain.

worth checking of correct a/b but also worth asking if it could be fungal, which is v common post-a/bs, this could be why nappy rash cream worked, many contain zinc which is what works on fungal infections

pancake123 · 01/01/2012 22:55

I did wonder about that cos I know ABs can cause thrush, but no sign of any discharge. Still, def taking her to see someone tomorrow, so I'll hopefully get some progress.

Thanks to all for your support, it's great to have someone to 'talk' to.

Your lucky my gp wanted to send off and didn't mention dipping there so took nearly a week before it was confirmed Sad
