Hi all. I posted earlier in the week about a temp and we took LO to Drs the next day and hes been given amoxicilllin for a possible ear infection (she couldnt see the drum for wax so thought it was with the raised temps) He also has an awful rash all over which is not unusal for him its a slightly raised but a typical viral rash. Anyway since the antibiotocs he seems to be getting terrible trapped wind, day and night. He starts trumping and is writhing and screaming then he stops suddenly, then it starts again. Hes not constipated, can antibiotics do this? Trying him on infacol as suggested by pharmacy but not really helping at mo. Any advice greatly appreciated :-(

ime experience yes, antibiotics do cause bowel upset. As he's presumably very young (have I missed his age?) would it be worth getting another opinion / bit of advice - gp / practice nurse / pharmacist?

Did the rash come on after he started the amoxicillin?

My ds is very prone to ear infections and gets on average 2 per month. Oral antibiotics do absolutely nothing so I would suggest asking your gp for Ofloxacin drops which you place directly into the ear canal and so it treats the infection directly. It also doesn't give the horrid side effects that oral antibiotics give. My gp was initially resistant to the drops but he spoke to our ENT surgeon who said that they really are the only things that work. Hope he feels better soon.

Hi
He had the rash before the antibiotics it has got worse but he does tend to get a rash with anything even teething. It dosnt seem to bother him tho. He has also had amoxil before. He is 18 months old and although colicy when a baby he grew out of it. This seems to coincide with antibiotics. They only gave him the amoxil as he was under 2 to be honest and when not having the trapped wond is starting to be a bit like his normal self. Just l

I'm in the same position ds has ear infection we found out today, he also has the runs terribly

DeWe · 30/12/2011 19:50

Sounds just like ds. The only thing that's worked for him is grommets.

He always got the viral rash, and all except one of the antibiotics gave him dreadful tummy ache followed by the runs. Thankfully he's grown out of having bad tummy ache every time he has antibiotics. Now if he could grow out of the ear infections too, please...

I'd recommend giving probiotics with antibiotics to limit runny tummys, in South Africa apparently they do this as standard with an ab prescription, I think the ab's kill the 'good bacteria' in the gut
