Persistent fever for eight days...??!

OK, so DD (12) has been ill now for over a week with a now chesty cough and a high temperature - over 40 degrees at times. She is obviously not herself but at her most unwell only when the temp spikes. If it is controlled with paracetamol and ibuprofen it returns to normal and she says she's better, feels fine and eats as normal. When hot, she sort of depressed, v miserable and has zero appetite. We are now on day 8 of the fever and although we've seen a doctor twice (last Wed and Fri) I really don't know what to do about trying to see someone - or do we just sit it out and continue with giving both medicines literally round the clock to keep the temp down. I have never had a child with a fever for this long (she's the eldest of 4 DCs) and do not know what to do next... Feel really helpless. We are away at my parents. She could see their GP as the surgery is open as usual for the rest of this week. It's that or waiting to see our GP but now not til next Tuesday. I know they'll probably tell me again that it's just viral but really, is 8 days of fever cause for concern or just an indicator of a really evil bug?? MPD

Sounds like a bacterial chest infection given the high temp, I would take her to GP for antibiotics

kawasaki disease is a possibility that needs considering in a persistant unrelenting fever [http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Kawasaki-disease/Pages/Symptoms.aspx here]]
Alternatively she may have developed a secondary infection which needs antibiotics, so your parents' gp will cover you as a temporary resident, and I would get her checked again. Doesnt mean she had a treatable infection 5 days ago but something could have developed since then. Most fevers last no longer than 3 days.

Ds (then just 4) was like this last year. Turned out he had pneumonia so his chest was sounding clear because the infection was too low to detect without an x ray. However his temperature wasn't coming down at all.

I'd take her back to get checked.

She has upper lobe pneumonia. Glad we saw a GP today. Thanks for your replies. MPD
